Cops tell Dorchester man his money's no good after he tried to bribe them before they booked him for stealing a car while drunk, DA says

A Dorchester man was released on personal recognizance - but ordered to attend AA meetings - at his arraignment today on a variety of charges for an incident in South Boston early Saturday in which he allegedly stole a car, fell into a drunken stupor at a traffic light, accelerated when two Boston cops woke him up, then offered them $10,000 to let him go, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Derek Froio, 29, was charged with OUI, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, negligent operation and attempting to bribe police officers, the DA's office reports. In addition to AA meetings, South Boston Municipal Court Judge Pamela Dashiell ordered Froio to submit to random alcohol tests. He is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on Dec. 16.

The DA's office provided this account of what happened in Perkins Square:

Assistant District Attorney Jim Duffy said that on Saturday at about 1:57 a.m. Boston police responded to West Broadway in South Boston and were flagged down by an individual who said his vehicle had been stolen. The individual pointed to the vehicle, which was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of East Broadway and West Broadway. Officers approached the vehicle and knocked on the window to alert the driver, Froio, who appeared non-responsive. Officers opened the door and instructed Froio to put the vehicle in park. Instead, Froio stepped on the gas, nearly striking the officers.

The vehicle travelled several feet before coming to a stop, at which time officers removed Froio from the vehicle and handcuffed him. Officers observed Froio to be unsteady on his feet, slurring his speech, smelling of alcohol, and having red and glossy eyes. After being placed under arrest, Froio became extremely agitated and said "[My] dad is going to kill [me]… how much is this going [to] cost, 10 Gs?"

Froio refused to take a breath analyzer test and resisted being fingerprinted. While being booked, Froio told officers that "I'll send you both $5,000 each to make this go away… I get there is a moral compass, but we all need money. That’s a vacation."

Innocent, etc.

Adam - change Dorchester man to a few hundred feet from Jerusalem Road raised man. Hence the daddy reference and the quick, and seemingly attempted before opportunity try to bribe his way out.

A decent defense attorney for OUI, per a friend of mine who is a damn good one, is $8,000. You already spit the bit on the bribe alone dummy.

The cops could have just seized it by applying civil asset forfeiture. For those who do not know civil asset forfeiture is process in which law enforcement officers take assets from people who are suspected of involvement with crime or illegal activity without necessarily charging the owners with wrongdoing. While civil procedure, as opposed to criminal procedure, generally involves a dispute between two private citizens, civil forfeiture involves a dispute between law enforcement and property such as a pile of cash or a house or a boat, such that the thing is suspected of being involved in a crime. To get back the seized property, owners must prove it was not involved in criminal activity.

If he really did have $10gs on him the cops would have taken it as evidence of his attempted bride, not by civil forfeiture.

Maybe the lad was simply confused about how many drinks he had consumed. "Lemme see, I had 3 scorpion bowls at Michelle's Tiki Tavern in Rozzie. Then I had 2 pints at the Eire, watched a bit of Alabama LSU on the telly, but no action there except old white guys arguing about Question 4. Then I went to the Pony Room but the lights were off. Then I went to Annissa's Tatar Room, a sort of after hours joint near the highway, but they didn't serve me because I was sauced. Then I went to some place on Broadway with a line of smokin chicks on the sidewalk, and finally got in for last call and had 4, no 3 shots of tequila. The chicks invited me to a party but they got in an uber and said I didn't fit but take their friend's car parked right there and the next thing you know the cops are pullin me outa the car an arrestin me. The ads on TV say if you get caught drunk drivin it costs 10 grand, so I offered to pay up right then and there."
