Athol man convicted of attacking cops during failed Capitol coup
A jury in Washington, DC today convicted Vincent Gillespie of Athol of using a police shield to attack cops defending the Capitol and of trying to pull one cop into the mob, the US Attorney's office in Washington reports.
Gillespie, 61, faces sentencing on March 17 on his convictions for assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers; civil disorder; engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds; and act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings.
According to the US Attorney's office:
The evidence at trial showed that on January 6, 2021, from approximately 4:11 p.m. to 4:26 p.m., Gillespie was among rioters in the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol who engaged in pushing, shoving, yelling, and fighting with law enforcement officers. He struggled his way through the crowd, eventually maneuvering through the rioters to the line of police officers defending the Lower West Terrace’s exterior door. At one point, he gained control of a police shield and used it to ram the police. He then used two hands to grab a Metropolitan Police Department sergeant by the arm, yanking him toward the mob. He then screamed “traitor” and “treason” at the police.
Fellow Athol residents, including a former neighbor and the manager of a hardware store he shopped at, quickly turned him in after recognizing him in one of the batches of photos the FBI released of Vanilla ISIS rampagers after the failed putsch.

This country
Spends obscene sums of money on policing, surveillance, and military at all levels.
Why did anyone believe that they would attack its officials, and get away with it?
One reason
The President at the time was egging them on.
The Court should throw the dictionary at him.
I don't think "treason" and "traitor" mean what he THINKS they mean.
I think he might have a lot
I think he might have a lot of time to catch up on his reading soon, that might help.
Plus
President Donald Trump had just gotten finished pardoning a bunch of his allies for their crimes committed on his behalf.

Pay special attention to December 23rd. What he forgot was that those people were either mega-rich, people Trump appointed or people Trump personally knew. Apparently one of his main concern on January 6th was 'why were his supporters dressed so poorly?'.
Wow
He went on a spree, didn't he just? I knew about Stone and Manafort but was unaware that he'd pardoned Charles Kushner. Tacky, tacky, tacky.
In that case
I would have made sure that the permission to haul off on a federal police officer was guaranteed in the form of a signed and notarized presidential pardon, but that's just me.
The guy is an Athol.
The guy is an Athol.
This must be the athol
that had Shiva signs all over Route 2A the last time I was in that area.
Howie Carr
had a good line about Athol being something "with a lisp"
Howie would know
Since he's a fan of the biggest Athol.
Athol High School
Is the mascot of Athol High School still the Raiders?
(No subject)
Athol and Belchertown high schools are in the same division.
I can only imagine the mutual heckling when they have a game.
The town name you'll hear
When you cut Daffy Duck off at a rotary
Part of their sentence
Should be to read "A man without a country" by Edward Hale.
