Hyde Park man on bail in Brighton copper-theft case charged with trying to sneak a loaded gun onto a plane at Logan

A Hyde Park man traveling with a child was arrested at Logan Airport yesterday after he allegedly tried to get a loaded handgun onto a plane - while traveling with a child - the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Lorenzo Beechman, 36, who was arrested in Brighton last month while he and a pal were allegedly trying to lift several spools of copper wiring from a Brighton construction site, was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Jan. 4, the DA's office reports.

Beechman was formally charged with carrying a loaded firearm, third offense, being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and violating airport security, the DA's office says.

Beechman, who has a gun-related arrest record dating to at least 2008, tried sneaking the gun past a Terminal A security checkpoint by hiding it inside a shoebox covered by a brown paper bag that he'd placed on a screening-machine belt. The box also contained other, legal, items, the DA's office says.

Screening personnel secured the package. Beechman, who was traveling with a minor child, proceeded to his gate with the child and the rest of his belongings. When approached by troopers, Beechman initially admitted the package was his. When asked what was in the package, he retracted his statement, saying “no, that’s not my bag. I thought you were talking about another bag.”

Video surveillance showed Beechman placing the bag on the security belt. Beechman was arrested and the child was placed into the custody of a relative.

In addition to last month's copper theft, Beechman also has current open cases involving armed robbery and assault on a police officer, the DA's office says.

Innocent, etc.

Bet you, he sold some stashed copper to buy a plane ticket and a new gun.

Gun prices aren't that cheap these days.

Plane ticket prices are ticking up too.
Depending on where you're going.

With 3 magazines, a lock and a case will cost you around $400.

"[Beechman allegedly] tried sneaking the gun past a Terminal A security checkpoint by hiding it inside a shoebox covered by a brown paper bag that he'd placed on a screening-machine belt"...in what world does this possibly work? Even at my advanced age the depths of human ignorance continue to astound. And yet this guy found his way to Logan without getting run over somehow.

for people like this?

He very clearly has no intent to follow society's laws. Do we just lock him up for 6 month stints for the every crime over the next 20 years?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that, possibly, this guy just might be an actual idiot.
