National Guard to send Charlie Baker out with a bang

Downtown kaboom alert: Normally, we only get howitzers firing downtown when the Ancient and Honorables have their leadership change in April, but if you're anywhere near the Common on Wednesday between 5 and 6 p.m., get your hands ready to cover your ears.

The Massachusetts National Guard’s 1/101st Field Artillery Regiment will fire off rounds to salute Charlie Baker as he exits that normally closed State House doors that will open so he can take a ceremonial "lone walk" down onto the Common and resume being just one of us again.

And then he will fade away at Park Street as he gets on the Green Line up to North Station for the train ride back home to Swampscott. Oh, wait, no, he'll probably have a limo waiting for him.

I know most posters won’t agree, but I think he did an outstanding job! Here’s hoping Maura takes the torch and runs with it.

Baker was no worse and probably a bit better then Patrick. That isn't saying much. I didn't vote for Baker but didn't feel he was putting the state or democracy at risk unlike most in his party at this point. It's a low bar.

Baker sucked when it came to the MBTA but was only the lastest in a long line of state executives that would rather the T not exist. (Or only exist between 7:30am and 6pm weekdays.)

I wish Healey (who I did vote for) all the best. If she governs the same way as she was an AG she'll be pretty similar to Baker. Responsive but not proactive and steadfastly avoiding groups like the state police.

When Charlie Baker ran against Patrick in 2010 and then ran again in 2014, his whole deal was “I’ll fix the T”.” Yet, the Orange line caught fire and someone had to jump into the Mystic, a guy’s arm got ripped off and he died, and the Orange Lins shut down for a whole month, and now it’s still running like crap. And it was an idea Baker championed in the Weld administration, take T money and use it for the Big Dig, that got them there. I’m not saying Baker soleley responsible for the T’s woes, but he did brand himself as the T’s savior and the system became both objectively and abjectively worse under Baker’s “leadership.”

Furthermore, during Covid, Baker too often took a wait-and-see approach, in other words,”do nothing,” and that was lapped up by uncritical observers as being “moderate.” But he’ll never face the music for all the veterans that died in Chelsea and Holyoke. Inaction is not moderation.

Congrats to Charlie Baker for keeping the seat warm. But what did he accomplish? Can anyone name a Charlie Baker accomplishment? Patrick, although flawed, championed and passed a huge investment in life science and that seems to still be impacting the economy today. What is Baker’s signature accomplishment? And why is he the world’s most popular Gov. (besides the obvious)?

…. the poor fellow’s hair felt like it caught fire as he passed the buck on his serious mishandling of the first vaccine distributions.

Good riddance!

I think that implies that actual projectiles will leave the cannon, rather than just a powder charge going off. I hope that's not going to happen Speaking of charges, I'm sure the Guard could reduce the charge, and thereby reduce the noise. Maybe they will ...

Here I am rotting on the Sullivan Sq platform for half an hour so I can pack into a new, broken-down train moving slower than I can walk.

But yeah.

It wasn't Baker.

Although he made the MBTA worse in plenty of other ways.

Aside from the enormous structural damage he did to the T before he was governor, by sticking the T with Big Dig debt, Baker was Governor, making him ultimately responsible for every loose bolt on the T even if he never personally swung a wrench.

So on his last day he finally rides the T? That's wild.
