It's official: Boston to get wicked cold

Mayor Wu has declared a cold emergency for Friday into Sunday due to temperatures and wind chills that could fall well below freezing.

Or as the National Weather Service says:

The coldest Wind Chill values of -15 to -45 are anticipated Friday night into early Saturday.

The NWS adds that the lowest numbers will be in the interior, away from the coast, but still, brace yourself even if you live right on the water.

Boston is opening warming centers at BCYF center and notes that libraries will also be open to help you warm up during their normal business hours.

The city is urging residents to check in with their older neighbors, people with disabilities and the homeless to make sure they are warm.

If you see people experiencing homelessness out in the cold, please call 911. If residents are aware of anyone staying in a vehicle or a place not intended for living during these extreme cold temperatures, they are encouraged to call 911 as well.

The city says be alert to frostbite symptoms:

Signs of frostbite include loss of feeling and white or pale appearance in extremities such as fingers, toes, ear lobes, and the tip of the nose. If symptoms are detected, get medical help immediately.

Also hypothermia:

These include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness and apparent exhaustion. If you or someone you know shows any of these symptoms, contact a healthcare provider immediately. If symptoms are severe, call 911.

And don't forget your pipes:

Circulate warm air around pipes by keeping cabinet doors open. Circulate a trickle of tap water through pipes during extreme cold to help prevent them freezing up.

Saturday morning the Low Temperature in Boston could smash the record for the date Feb 4 which has stood for over 100 years

But that's just the weather -- nothing related to Climate Change

Note that:

  1. Logan Airport {KBOS} has been the current home of the official temperature measurement for the City of Boston since the mid 1920's
  2. and while the place of measurement has moved a few times since then,
  3. the amount of asphalt and concrete has increased tremendously
  4. and further some significant amount of filling has occurred to the harbor in the past 100 years
