Rat tale: Police say man threatened people at Oak Grove with his pet rat

Transit Police report a man who rides the rails with his rat Jerry went too far at the Oak Grove Orange Line station yesterday afternoon: As he sat and boozed it up, he used Jerry to threaten passersby, around 4 p.m.

Police say the Jeffrey Stewart, 57, who has become an increasingly familiar sight on the subway as he holds Jerry or lets him perch on his shoulders, also refused to leave the station after officers said it was time for him and his rodent friend to leave, police say, adding Stewart and Jerry have become "well known for causing disturbances" among T riders who have enough to worry about besides scampering rodents.

Stewart was charged with disorderly conduct, trespassing and making threats, police say. Both Stewart and Jerry were transported to TPD headquarters on Southampton Street, where Stewart was booked and Jerry was handed over to Boston animal control, which has its shelter on Mahler Road in Roslindale, which means Jerry is, at least for now, a Rozzie rat.

Innocent, etc.

I've been following stories about this guy for the past few months and I don't think that's his only rat. I have a pic of him with a very different, white rat.

I wonder what "used Jerry to threaten passersby" means, though. Was he brandishing the rat at them?

This miscreant sits at the Irish famine memorial by the Walgreens downtown drinking himself stupid, alone, and headbanging to heavy metal all day. He wears a cape! I know he keeps the rat in question in his hoodie kangaroo pocket, I’m so amazed that it hasn’t gnawed his belly out while he’s passed out drunk. It’s not like a little pinkie you can get at Petco, it’s a real live big brown sewer rat.

Jeffrey is a real pill. He likes me because I wear a vintage Ramones shirt sometimes. I’m happy enough to stay on his good side.

Worried about whether we are in the good graces of rat-wielding, cape-wearing, headbanger drunks at DTX? Oh, and, by the way, wearing a cape with a hoodie is tres gauche.

curious what the rat thinks of all this.

I don't know this guy, but reading the comments, I suspect the rat might be the brains of the outfit.

The rat is probably frightened and lonely. The accepted practice for rat ownership is to keep at least two, since they're a social animal and need to be with others. Also, being dragged around in a hoodie is not ideal because there's no as-wanted access to food and water, there are many opportunities to get dropped or squished and there are unfamiliar scary smells.

It's what's known as a "fancy rat", which is the term for domesticated Rattus norvegicus. (Fancy as in "Cat Fancier".) The wild ones look and behave differently. Jerry is a born-and-bred pet rat.

Obviously it's not a little pinkie, it's an adult. But it's the same kind you can get at Petco.

This just in from Waltham:

GUINEA PIG NOT HURT IN 2-CAR CRASH

A Toyota Prius and a Mazda CX-5 collided at the intersection of South and Bedford Streets Tuesday shortly before 2:00 p.m.

The operator of the Mazda was transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital with minor injuries.

Another passenger in that vehicle, a guinea pig, was not hurt in the crash, which remains under investigation.

It later transpired that the guinea pig had been driving, but it and the human passenger agreed to say otherwise, because the guinea pig also had had a few beers earlier.

Nice pets but short lives.

If you love 'em, prepare to leave 'em.

Is Stewart's middle name Willard?

"Tear it up!"
