Charlestown bowling alley pins down licenses for lanes and liquor

The Boston Licensing Board today approved plans for a 14-lane bowling alley at Hood Park off Rutherford Avenue - and the operators' proposal to buy the liquor license of the former Dogwood Cafe in Jamaica Plain for keglers and diners.

Urban Wild hopes to open its new 25,000-square-foot family-friendly restaurant, bowling alley, stage area and bar by July, according to its job postings.

Urban Wild will have room for 430 patrons inside and another 139 people on an outdoor patio. The lanes, restaurant and bar will be open until 2 a.m.; the patio until 11 p.m.

At a hearing yesterday, manager Peter Simonelli did not say if the lanes would be for candlepin or tenpin.

I miss the Dogwood and am sorry to hear that, apparently, that location won't be reopening as a new restaurant with an alcohol license.

On the other hand, more bowling alleys is always a plus in my book, so I guess it's win some and lose some.

My support for this hinges entirely on the question Simonelli refused to answer at the hearing.

Candlepin, sweet.

Tenpin, keep that skill-less transplant garbage out of my city.

It's that it just never came up.

That should have been question number one!

For the actual substance, it is good that the license isn't going to the Seaport, Back Bay, or downtown. What that section of Charlestown will be like in 10 or 20 years has yet to be seen, but it's still a ordinary neighborhood.

Isn't a normal neighborhood and I'm not sure it ever was. It's separated from the rest of Charlestown by a ~100-foot-wide divided highway (Rutherford Ave) and ultimately it's going to look like the Seaport or Assembly Sq since it's a redevelopment of formerly industrial land.

I have to wonder if he understands where this is going to be. It's very much not anything like what he described, and you are quite right that it will look like the Seaport in 10-15 years.

I'm going to assume candlepin

I'm guessing this will be much more like a King's type of place than a Ron's.

Kegelers or keglers?

I Googled it to make sure which was right, and the first result for "kegeler" mentioned bowling, but, yeah.

It’s ridiculous that a Charlestown establishment has to take a license away from JP in order to serve liquor. Thanks, corrupt Beacon Hill legislature for not letting Boston set their own rules!
