I saw a program on TV regarding a third-world country and people were wearing T-shirts of the losing Super Bowl team as the winning team. Shirts are made in advance for both teams so they can be sold immediately after the victory. The losing team shirts apparently get donated to a third-world country where clothing of any kind is appreciated.
But this? Why was is made and why would any self-respecting Bostonian even wear it?

Dumping shirts like this in third-world countries destroys developing garment industries.

Ruins their indigenous agricultural industry. Some people just can't stomach seeing folks in developing nation wearing rags and starving until they can pull themselves up by their bootstraps, it's a shame.

They don't do that anymore. At least they didn't back in 2007 for the Patriots. The Reebok reps came (with their holographic stickers) and sat in the then local print shop that had rights to print (it's since closed) to listen to the game. They would give the go ahead when it was safe to begin printing. That shop had already printed the locker room shirts. I can't remember if they embroidered or printed the locker room hats there as well. I think most know the sad tale of that Superbowl.

For the Bruins win in 2011, I didn't see my spouse for a couple of days due to the printing needs. Shops like Dick's may have gotten their shirts from elsewhere, but local Hot Market* shops don't start printing until that night. And the reps (Nike or Reebok) held onto the holographic stickers, putting them on the shirts as they came out of the dryer.

But yes, it wasn't always this way. I believe there were some winning Red Sox shirts in the basement of a print shop in Chinatown in the late '90's. Not sure where those went.

*Nike or Reebok would visit the shop and deem it capable of printing capacity before granting them the right to do official game night shirts. There's more to it, I'm sure. Such as also having paid to have the right to print Official^tm team gear.

I once had a Beijing 2000 Olympics T-shirt that my wife brought back from China. They, um, didn't get the Olympics that year. It was a pretty flimsy shirt, and didn't last until 2008, when they did get the Games.
