Man with knife charged with threatening to kill Blue Line worker, getting into it with T cop

GibbsA Jamaica Plain man got cut over his left eye during a struggle with an MBTA Transit Police officer investigating threats against a worker at the Wood Island Blue Line stop last night.

According to a police report, officers got a call around 9:30 p.m. from a customer-service agent at the station about a "loud and disruptive" man whom the CSA said had threatened to kill him. The officers were able to get Gentyrus Gibbs, 36, out of the station, but when they told him to sit down, he instead jumped up and came at one of the officers - who noticed he had a sheathed knife on his right hip. The two battled and both fell to the ground, with Gibbs getting a cut open above his right eye, the report says. As another officer grabbed his legs, the report says, the first cuffed him.

Police say Gibbs refused to let EMTs - or medical personnel at Mass. General - treat his cut and the hospital eventually put him in four-point leather restraints, the report says.

The report does not state what allegedly set Gibbs off.

Innocent, etc.

I wonder how often T employees are assaulted it seems that we are hearing about it on a daily basis. If a TSA worker over the airport was threatened it would be a federal crime. I guess the life of a T worker isnt held in high regards by the court system.

Why does hearing of assaults of T employees lead you to conclude that the life of a T employee is not held in high regard by the court system?

How did you make the jump from "we hear about it every day" to "the court doesn't care about it"?

Also, if a TSA worker at the airport were assaulted, it's very likely MSP would make the arrest, and the suspect would be charged with a state charge of assault. If the Feds did want to press federal charges, it would still be a misdemeanor (assuming it was only a "simple assault").

People misuse that term all the time. Parking illegally on post office property is a Federal offense; just because something's a Federal offense doesn't mean it's a serious one.

A TSA agent was recently pushed and the defendant was sentenced in Federal Court for violating 18 USCS section 111 and sentenced to Federal Time

Again, it's a misdemeanor. So, "federal time" likely means he did two weeks in the county jail (paid for by the federal government). They aren't shipping people off to the supermax for it.

Title 18 USC Section 111 isn't written to make it a more serious crime to assault a federal employee (and it doesn't). It exists to give the federal government jurisdiction over an assault against an employee, even when it happens off of federal property, such as the airport.

I know some people have a hard-on for the TSA, but they are federal employees. Section 111 applies whether you're assaulting an air marshal, a baggage screener, or the janitor at the Moakley Courthouse. It doesn't apply to this story, though, which is about 2 MBTA employees being assaulted. In fact, throwing the TSA into this discussion is totally irrelevant. It just gives you an opportunity to whine about the TSA.
