Teen on bail for South Boston stomping charged with new violent attack in South Boston

Dereck McCann, 18, was among a pack of men who beat a man on G Street so badly early Saturday he lapsed into unconsciousness and needed metal staples to close the gashes in his head, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office charges.

McGann took part in the beating even as he awaits trial for a similar attack back in May in which he and some other pals allegedly stomped two men at East Broadway and I Street while yelling "Get out of Southie!"

McGann, the DA's office reports, lives in Dorchester.

South Boston District Court Judge Michael Bolden agreed with a request from prosecutors today to revoke his bail on the earlier case, which means he will not be leaving jail anytime soon. Just in case, he also agreed with prosecutors to set bail for the new charges of assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon at $50,000, set a 5 p.m. curfew and ordered him to wear a GPS monitoring bracelet. In May, McGann walked out on $1,000 bail, the DA's office says.

According to the DA's office, a 28-year-old man was walking alone on G Street near South Boston High School around 2:15 a.m., when McGann's pack allegedly pounced and beat him bloody:

McCann was allegedly seen running from the area of the attack and had blood on his outer clothing and his sneakers; Boston Police arrested him and seized his clothing for testing.

McCann is scheduled to return to South Boston District Court on Dec. 20 for a hearing on the weekend attack and Suffolk Superior Court on Dec. 12 for the May attack.

Innocent, etc.

Guess the $1000 bail in the previous arrest was real effective

you give judges absolute discretion in setting bail, and in not allowing prosecuters to appeal a judge's bail ruling that is lower than their recommendation.

for the hearing of McCann's first beating. It was a joke . He and the other 4 kids, plus the families were laughing like they were untouchable and proud they beat "two yuppies" up..they even started with me . A joke !

I am calling Linehan , Collins and the clan to see what they think and are going to do....they say they answer ...we will see.

Hi, I'm McCann's brother and just (and Idk why) wanted to say he's a lot better now. Having left southie and all the bad influences there behind, he's now an upstanding, working class citizen. I'm still disturbed by how long he was given, especially considering he was basically a kid, had shit friends and had mental issues.

So in short, I just wanted you to know him doing his time has made him a much better person.

Seeing the well wishes from his "niggas" makes me happy that this kid is going to have some fun in the can when he meets up with blacks that have no tolerance for little white "gangstas". I say that with experience, as I was the only white kid at an all black business when I was 16, and my mouth caught me many a beating.

I predict hours of fun will be had using this kid's head as a toilet brush the minute he starts with that "yo, yo yo" shit. Fuck him and his wigger friends.

They are just a few bad apples but they are not being stopped. The families need to step up and so do the politicans and do something about this.

The families have to step up? Time for the Cops and Courts to step up. One of McGann's partners (Lynch) in the I St. attack last May was arrested two weeks ago, for taking part in another beating on West Broadway. Time for this rampage to be put to an end.

cops and politicians to step up to the plate and do something about the problem, but it also sounds as if the families of these kids never bothered to teach them right from wrong when they were much younger. The families, too, need to step up, and not coddle these kids and cause charges against them dropped if and when they end up in court for their crimes.

Tether the judges' children to a lamppost in Southie at 2:30 AM with a sign that reads "(expletive) the Irish." It's the only way the judges are going to learn. Obviously, they want to learn the hard way. I have no idea why they don't have or respond to simple human decency. I really don't. And I never will.

I'm convinced that everybody who grew up here has a mental disease.

I'm a pretty liberal person, but I gotta agree that the judges here seem more like principals in some 1950's school. It often seems that crimes like this get a slap on the wrist. It's pretty disgusting.

If you were to show up the hearing, can add your $.02 to the judge? Something like "I live in this neighborhood, please keep this scumbag in jail"?

at my 2 cents in court and they didnt seem to care as I was only the only person there to support trhe victims ( outside of family) and there was a dozen or so for the kids.

We need to ALL go and show that we wont tolerate this anymore

Why is everyone acting like this is the end of the world? Southie is a shitty, working-class neighborhood and has been for a long time. I'm sure the residents are sick of "yuppies" moving in and changing the atmosphere of the neighborhood. These kind of attacks happen in north Philly, or Brooklyn, or the Tenderloin in frisco or any other neighborhood being invaded by trust-funders.

It's pretty annoying that these middle-class white people move into these neighborhoods and act surprised when they are directly affected by the crime that they know exists there. They seem to think they will magically avoid it and never be mugged, robbed, shot in crossfire etc.

If you don't want to ever see crime or are too much of a pussy to defend yourself from a few thug clowns, don't move to a "transitional" neighborhood. Use your parents money to go live in the suburbs for a few years until Roxbury and Southie are completely taken over by people with way too much money and you can go sip lattes on broadway to your hearts content.

I am a "yuppie" because I am not from Southie...yet I PROMISE you that I have had a harder life then you and 90% of Southie so dont tell me to move back the burbs or spend my parents money . Unlike you I made something of my life. I didnt decide to drink and get drunk all the time because my father was a raging alcoholic...I didnt start a life of crime because my father was in federal prison for a good part of my life and figured it must be in my blood...I didnt do drugs becasue my mom was a heroin addict??? Nope I decided to get a #$%^&* job...then get a second one...studied even with no lights or heat or half the time with no bedroom ..played sports and worked at them to get better so I could BECOME SOMETHING!! I moved to Southie because I love it here , for the most part the new people and the old school people . And now 12 years later I am here to stay and a part of the community and I will promise you I will not let some little 18 year old punks or their jaded parents push me out...so if you and them are for it lets meet ?? We can sit down and sip a latte on Broadway or have a hot dog at Sullivans...either way I am man enough to show up will you or any of your tough guy friends?? See I want to fix and better this neighborhood and help the old southie residents teach the new southie residents a great way of life and vice versa...we are neighbors and all MUCH more alike than you think. Maybe if you stop and chat with someone you will learn that. I know I sure have and it has made me a better person. I have made hundreds of new friends "old" school and yuppie. And I also know that with every bad "southie lifer" there is a bad "yuppie" who sucks too..

Let me know

When one of your brothers, sisters, cousins, friends or some other relative is the victim of such a crime you can be entitled to your "you should have known better" attitude. That's like saying that a girl walking down the street by herself is asking to get raped. The fact in that these punks are leaving people for dead on the sides of the roads. Did you read the article? This guy has his head being held together with staples! The two beaten by Lynch a few weeks ago were Boston Firemen... were they asking for it by being in Southie? The two guys in May were left nearly dead and are not yuppies who "moved into their neighborhood" BUY A CLUE and then comment on something you know nothing about!

First of all, Southie is not a "shitty, working-class neighborhood", and since I've been a homeowner for the 10 years, I am one of the residents. In addition to being a financial professional, I'm also a 10 veteran of the US Marines and I think I have the right to be pissed that a group 5-6 18 year old scumbags are repeatedly jumping (that's right, jumping, not fighting) guys walking home from a few beers in neighborhood on a Saturday.

And we don't have to wait 10 years to be sipping latte's on Broadway, Starbucks is coming in a few months. It's all over after that, enjoy Brockton!

This kid is a complete scumbag. Check his rapsheet. Very long and a number of offenses. Call Detectives in Southie to inquire.

The name Lynch ring a bell? He is the same one from the I street beating. Also tied to another recent beating of a off duty fire fighter. However the charges were dropped due to Uncle Stevie (Yes REP Steven Lynch) calling a favor into the BFP (probably Ed Kelly) and getting the charges dropped. Also, his other uncle I think works in MUMBLES office. Nice to know when you are 'connected' you can do some serious stuff and walk away free bird.

These kids are a menace to an otherwise perfect place to live (Southie).

Soon the parents will either:
A. Give in and 'sell out' and make a pretty penny on their house
OR
B. Get priced out by yuppies raising the rents around them.

This is a typical scenario that has always been the mantra of Southie kids. Pussies 1 on 1, but heroes when it is 5 (or more) on 1.

Do you have more on this?

It make a great globe article.... Adam, got any friends that might want to take the lead?

Lynch was found guilty March 7 and sentenced for one of the attacks, I believe the November attack. And, prior to being found guilty by the judge yesterday, he had been incarcerated for several months. His bail from the May incident was revoked - not sure why, probably when he was charged with this 2nd assault.
So, it doesn't appear any charges were dropped nor favors called in. (Not sure he is related to Stephen Lynch. It's a common name. Are you sure about that connection? And the Mumbles one? Or just conjecture?)

What do these teens have to do for someone to stand up and do the right thing? Why does Lynch (one of the other teens involved in the May beating) committ another crime and get out on bail and this kid gets treated differently? Political connections playing their part??? Seriously! What about the kid stabbed on the 4th of July at Southie Heights on the way to the airport for his trip home... was that related to this? How many people have to be left for dead on the side of the Southie Streets before this GANG is locked up and the key thrown away? How many times is Daniel Lynch going to be let go before his political connections don't save him? Wake up people...... write to your SENATOR and tell him how you feel! Write to the Mayor and ask him what he intends to do to control the crime spree in Southie. One of the kids from the May beating has a parent with a high ranking job in the Mayors office in Boston. WAKE UP! Put the power back in the publics hands by letting our Politicians know that their voters are NOT HAPPY.

What scares me is that Universal Hub is the only place I've read about this. What about the Globe, the Herald? Yikes, can't we depend on them for coverage?

up
Voting closed 0

This site regularly features stories you won't read in the major dailies. Don;t ask me why, but I think that the Globe only wants to write about pizza places and the wonder of the Back Bay. The Herald only wants to feature columnists who haven't figured out what the word blog means and celebrity items that turn out to be 100% wrong.

I wish I had a dime for every time I've driven a celebrity that those two sows at the Herald have posted incorrect info about their visit to our fair city. I miss you, Norma.

You won't see anything in the Globe or the Herald because they are all run by politically connected people as well. There was ONE TINY article in one of the papers regarding the May beating in one of the papers but it certainly wasn't frong page news. It's just crazy!

This story came out almost at the same exact time as the doggy blow-dart attack, i.e., the Suffolk County District Attorney's office issued press releases about both almost simultaneously (the South Boston one came out first - scroll down this page).

If you're an assignment editor and can only choose one senseless Boston crime story, which one are you going to go with? Man bites/shoots dog with a blowgun wins every time.

Me, I go with all the senseless Boston crime stories, but I have no life.

OK folks so I see a lot of angry people here on this site. People who are sick of being bullied by neighborhood punks who think they can do whatever they want. So read the article, put the court dates in your calendar book and let's go tell these judges just how angry we are! It's easy to stay behind the scenes and talk a lot of trash but how many will be in that courtroom showing their support???

Please keep us updated on this story. Nice to see it being reported somewhere. I've searched everywhere for this article and haven't found it anywhere else other than the Suffolk County DA offices website. BPD News didn't even run a story on it. I figured the Globe and Herald woouldn't touch it

if you are a Southie resident ( yuppie or lifer) and are sick of this sh*t then lets do something. We can get the court date and all show up. Better yet next week we can flood the DA's office with calls and tell him we want action? I have already called all of the city counselors for the district and have called for action.
I went to court the last time around ( as in my post way up top) and was the ONLY one there . I was harassed by the kids and families( a mother told me to mind my f*cking buisness) but I stayed and said my peace. Last time I was told 50 plus people would show ( the court officers even told me they were expecting more) and no one did..So this time are we all going??????

There is a pre trial hearing on January 20th at 9am at South Boston Court. The "yuppies" they beat last time were 2 Boston firefighters . Be there and let them know this neighborhood is not going to tolerate this. The victim has 5 staples holding his head together.
As for people downing southie, these little douches are not from southie, only 2 were. THey are from Brockton, Dorchester, and the burbs.

up

they deserve to be brought to justice and taken off the streets for awhile so they know that going around mugging and injuring innocent people doesn't pay on the long run. Just because they're somehow "connected" doesn't give them the right to go out, terrorize and wreak havoc on the public and violate people's rights to walk when and where they want to walk without worrying about being assaulted or whatever. These kids have to be stopped before they end up killing somebody, because by then it'll be too late.

They allready have. A homeless man was killed a few years back.

Something's really wrong with this picture! Why weren't these kids locked up several years ago?

The homeless guy's death is horrible enough, but It's equally horrifying that none of the kids who murdered the homeless guy have gone to jail for this.

There are points being raised that everyone is failing to see, don't move to a troubled area and expect not to see or run into some Shit , on the other hand everyone has the right to walk home safely. The point to be made is yes these kids I personally know shouldn't be running around doing this bs plain and simple but don't you people sit there on your high horses talking down about the neighborhood or the people in it because not everyone is like that. like one person pointed out these types of issues happen in areas like southie worldwide where suburban or yuppie types move to the inner city areas like southie and some times much worse off areas and witness the crimes or become a victim of a crime that is a regular occurrence for that area, that would be like me walking by the view of a hunter in the woods dressed as a deer and expecting not to get shot, I'm not saying they are asking for it but don't move to a troubled area if you're not ready to defend your self if needed. All of you high and mighty types on here Shit talking the entire town and its life long residents are no better than the supposed scum you're irate about, the only difference is their foolish misguided kids who should know better and youre an idiot spreading the same hate they are but atleast they have the balls to show their face with their misguided hatred while u hide behind a comment on a webpage almost no one will see
