Man shot to death in Roslindale project

CastilloUPDATE: Friends and family identify the victim as Nelson B. Castillo, 25, of Roslindale. He leaves his wife and young daughter.

Shortly before midnight at 80 Archdale Rd.

This was the eighth shooting in Boston on Saturday but the only fatal one.

Last December, a man was fatally shot in the head at 20 Brookway Terrace, followed the next month by a woman being shot to death a couple blocks away on Fawndale Rd. In April, cars were shot up at 80 Archdale.

Thank you for your support. Their rude generalizations do not phase us. Us, the family will continue to remember him as the loving father he was. That "nameless" coward should be ashamed of themselves for posting such an obsecene comment on such an emotional article involving some bodies life. And all the other rude comments for that matter. Regardless of race and lifestyle and such other aspects, we are human and death hurts. Especially when it was someone that meant so much to you. But thank you for acknowledgment, it is greatly appreciated.

It's time to clean house down in that bad section of Roslindale. It is getting worse as each year passes. Time for law enforcement, Boston Housing Authority, and landlords to crack down hard on this kind of activity. Enough is enough!

I used to live--literally--on the other side of the tracks from Archdale, and I was very happy there was such a hard barrier between us. That place was crazy. Of course calling the cops about it resulted in nothing. I have to wonder sometimes if BPD's inability to address quality-of-life complaints in a neighborhood eventually leads to something like this. The residents escalate without interference, and then somebody gets killed.

The biggest problem is they could very well do a sweep of Archdale. I recall back in 1992 they did one in St. Alphonsus, complete with ATF and black helicopters. It was highly successful.
But with the way jails are overcrowded it's more than likely most, if not all, of the people caught up in a sweep today would be back on the street inside of a week.

Thus i would suggest they do such a sweep, dumping all people caught in it on one of the empty harbor islands and have a couple patrol boats to ensure nobody leaves by swimming. Drop them there with a few supplies and then let them go Lord of the Flies. They can either work together to grow food and survive or all starve to death or kill each other.

do you mean the three big towers between Huntington Avenue and Tremont Street? I thought those contained mostly people associated with the various Longwood medical establishments.

You're thinking of the private apartment towers across the street.

Between St. Alphonsus and Parker Street, Ward and Tremont Streets, there used to be brick building projects that looked much like the way Bromley Heath still looks. Also known as "Mission Main", they razed the whole complex of housing and rebuilt around 1993, swapping certain blocks and properties with Wentworth and North Eastern during the process.
What is there now is still public housing, but not the rough and tumble projects it used to be.

Crime around boston housing units is out of control. Something needs to be done. I wish I knew what, but this is just unacceptable. I live in Roslindale, and I see a lot of young children living in that vicinity, and this is not what kids should have to become accustomed to. A young girl has just lost her father, and for what? Enough is enough.

My company picks up a kid from those projects to bring him to school. Excellent student, and really good family. Shame to see what they have to live with and what others do to bring down the place.

This man was a nice guy..He was an awesome daddy to his little girl. He'd take her into the daycare faithfully every morning & made sure she was OK every time. Before he would leave her he'd ask the daycare if he needed to bring anything... I remember a morning when I was dropping off my baby girl he was crossing with his little girl & she was so upset crying because she wanted to stay with him it was so cute, he kept on telling her " baby its ok your going to have fun you always do papi loves you papi will come back & get you" our daughters play together every day its so sad that they took her daddy she adored him so much..

Thank you for this beautiful comment. Two years later, I still come back to read it. It's so true and great to read among the rest of the awful comments on this thread.

I dropped off a rental last Friday at the Enterprise office that is right next to Archdale and walked back home.

Walked past a dude who was holding his midsection. He saw me and didn't care. Probably an EBT-card holder. And I imagine that English was not his first language.

Was totally skeeved out until I came to the Greek-owned gas station. Then, I felt safe. And this was in broad daylight!

There are some really nice new condos in that area. Who would want to live there if it is a third-world hell-hole and shooting range?

You saw a fat guy, immediately made two gigantic assumptions, and then proceeded to condemn the whole neighborhood on that basis?

I can't tell if you're racist, stupid, or both.

Definitely leaning towards both.

tear these places [projects] down. They are a cancer on the surrounding neighborhoods and society as a whole. Stop enabling bad/dysfunctional behavior.

I can't believe some of the comments posted here. Who cares if a guy was holding his midsection or if he does or doesn't have an ebt card. Maybe he had gas, who knows. He wasn't bothering you. And some people who hold ebt cards have fallen on hard times and need help. All of it irrelevant to Nelson's murder. He was a good friend of mine and my family. He was a great father to his little girl. I'd see him bring his daughter to daycare every day. A man's life was taken and all you can talk about is a man holding his stomach. Have some compassion for his family. Archdale is not that bad. I raised my son's there, I was raised there. My son is a college graduate. My other son is still in high school. It's how you raise your children. There are bad people everywhere, including in the suburbs. Get a clue then get a life. Smdh, what is wrong with people. I don't get it.
I miss Twiggy- Nelson very much. A great friend who is now gone. His wife and daughter no longer wake up to him. It's a shame.
May you Rest in Paradise. For his family who comes back to read these comments, ignore the ignorant. His memory will live on...
