Man shot outside Ashmont station

Ashmont scene: Dunkin' Donuts to the right. Photo by David Finnerty.

A man was shot around 6:30 p.m. outside the station and in front of the Dunkin' Donuts across the street. A suspect was arrested not long after on Wrentham Street.

Police report the victim, 19, was shot in the stomach. Police say he is in serious but stable condition at a local hospital.

Tyrell Griffiths, 21, faces arraignment tomorrow in Dorchester District Court on charges of assault with intent to murder, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.

Police credit a network of cameras with leading them to Griffiths:

Immediately after the shooting, Detectives from C-11, with support from the Real Time Crime Center, were able to view camera footage from the scene via BPD's camera network. Because of this quick action, a suspect was identified fleeing the area and a detailed description was given out over BPD radio channels.

Members of the Youth Violence Strike Force and C-11 Anti-Crime units who were patrolling the area, observed a suspect matching the description a short distance from the shooting scene on nearby Wrentham Street. After a brief foot chase, the suspect was caught by officers and a loaded 45 caliber firearm was recovered.

Innocent, etc.

This is the second or third shootout at or next to the station in the last couple of months, its only a matter of time before these loose cannons shoot and kill innocent passengers at rush hour.

I find it interesting that a few robberies with no injuries at Jamaica Pond causes a total uproar with heavy police reaction (the special ops truck being stationed on the Pond). But multiple shootings at Ashmont, including a daytime shootout with police not too long ago, garnishes almost no reaction from police. It really shows that the police have given in to the violence at Ashmont. Ashmont is a powder keg and no one seems to care. The best they will do is assign a couple more Transit Cops to sit in their car and do absolutely nothing in the parking lot or sit in their little office and shoot the shit.

A shooting across the street from a station is not the Transit's fault. They station extra cops there anyway and you still find a way to dump on them.

I commute through Asmont and witness the ridiculous amount of trouble that goes on there everyday. I also see that the Transit Cops do not patrol the station but just stand or sit at there office while all hell breaks loose on the platforms at rush hour. I never see any BPD on foot patrolling the area. The amount of shootings and robberies in that area speaks for itself. I'm happy they caught the guy but it sounds like the camera system did the brunt of the work and shots still rang out at rush hour and unfortunately it's not an isolated insident. I'm not trying to beat on the cops but judging by the amount of crime and general unrest at this busy station it seems there tactics are ineffective.

About a month ago I saw dealers making "hand to hand" deals on the Ashmont platform near the Moon sculpture at 5:30pm on a work day. I called the Transit Police, AFTER I rounded the corner onto Ashmont St because momma didn't raise no fool, and was told by the female operator that they couldn't do anything because I didn't give a precise description. All I asked was the for the Transit officers to walk around the station, for them to get out of the little glass box for once, and they would see these guys slinging on the corner.

She got snippy with me and told me they couldn't do anything without a description. When I did give a description she said "You just described half the people at Ashmont." I'm sorry if I didn't stop to notice his eyes were hazel instead of blue, or that his jeans were actually midnight blue versus onyx black. Sorry, I'm not going to stare down guys selling drugs on the corner.

These guys were making deals in broad daylight at rush hour and the Transit Police would not respond.

I immediately called C-11. They were much more understanding and said they would send out a car ASAP.

I then called the Transit Police HQ number but no one answered because it was after 5pm on a Friday. Heaven forbid the office stay open the same hours as the MBTA. So I left a message. Never heard back.

The lesson here? Always call BPD first.

They caught a suspect.

Seeing as the police were quick to identify and arrest a suspect shortly afterward would suggest that the police are not quite sitting on their hands. As it has been demonstrated, it seems that BPD officers posted after school lets out, a manned Transit Police office at the station itself, and multiple security cameras in the vicinity are not enough to deter these idiots from shooting around the station, so what else would you have the cops do?

I have never seen any BPD officers at Ashmont. My point is the police presence should be actively patrolling Peabody Square and Ashmont so criminals will be detered from shooting and robbing people. I appreciate the Transit Police I would just ask them to take a more active roll when manning Ashmont Station. The whole area is a mess and I have not seen any improvement it's worth taking a different approach. People going to and coming from work shouldn't have to accept the dangerous state of that station.

Aside from treating shootings as an everyday occurrence, your comments seem to catastrophize the slight inconvenience of crowds, and beyond that calling the whole area a "mess" is really quite insulting to people who live close to Ashmont.

I have seen BPD officers at Ashmont - usually after school lets out. I would get yourself a police scanner so you can listen to the sheer volume of calls the police get throughout C-11 at any given time...they simply do not have the resources to patrol a small part of that district 24/7 indefinitely. If they get word of possible gang activity in the works they will, and it will probably be in the form of unmarked gang cars. And I say again, even a patrol car standing nearby will not deter some idiots if they see the guy they want to hit, no matter what their surroundings are.

The ATF, FBI and State PD need more resources /$ to stop the flow of illegally bought and sold weapons coming into our state.
This gun violence is going to get worse!

It would help if we kept violent felons locked up for more than 3-5 years instead of allowing them to re-offend. Blaming the tools of the trade only displaces responsibility (depersonalizing the individual and personalizing the inanimate) from the individuals responsible for criminality.

I remember a few years back: a Transit cop was actively walking around the station. He was on the platform and someone got shot in the busway. Police presence and cameras are NOT a deterrent. A cop once told me, "No one knows better how to police an area than those that have never done it.". Although the comments here are just complaints, no real solutions except to flood the area beyond budget and manpower capabilities.

Did anyone know the 19 yr old boy? Did anyone saw what he looked like? Or anything that describe him? They never say the name of the person.

I will be calling Marty walsh and the chief of police and my local political reps (who are running for reelection by the way) to demand something be done and suggest everyone else do the same. with the amount of people using ashmont t including teenagers who are the involved in The majority of these shootings ashmont should have a "command central" police presence the whole time the station is open. I have seen plain clothes detectives at the station during prime student hours but then they leave. While i am happy the response at jp was swift and strong i am miffed that a shooting a week at ashmont is accepted as the norm. Everyone call your local pols!

someone robbed and shot a mailman last December about a block away, there was a house party shooting in June a drive by at 9am on Ashmont street, another on Burt St. None of those have led to any arrests as far as I know.

I believe the mail robbery suspect was caught. Who has a house party at 9AM?

Surprising? Not the least bit. Those robberies are impacting a higher percentage of precious white folk. Sad truth.

Innocent people who are just going about their business? You've got to understand that when violence impacts someone who is completely unconnected to that violence, whether it's a white guy walking his dog or a black toddler sitting on a porch, people react differently than if it's one black gang member shooting another black gang member. Or, for that matter, two guys stabbed to death in a roomful of marijuana in Waltham. I don't recall hearing a peep about that story until they connected it to the marathon bombers. Make it all about race if you want to but mostly it tends to be about how closely people can relate to the victim and whether they're perceived as a player in the game or as an innocent victim.

The difference here is that there is a constant heavy police presence in Dot. Especially undercover cops. There isn't that presence in JP so the heavy response is that much more noticeable.

When shit goes down in dot you see and hear cars from all over Dot responding to scene. then you get a sense of the numbers in the area.

Remember, they're also patrolling dot Ave, Washington Street and BlueHill Ave, as well as the gang hotspots off the aves.

Pissed off, out of control, have gun, plenty of time....just follow.....find......shoot.......flee.......hide.
Hope to hit the intended target. Innocent bystanders?
Who gives a shit!.....Scary that these gangbangers and thugs think this way.

When people are convicted of firing a gun with or without proven intent to kill, or commiting an actual murder,

They should be sentenced to jail time and work cleaning ER Trauma Units and/or work in a Morgue.

BPD needs to put more cameras in the highest crime areas since the residents won't give them any information!

Operative words: "Police credit a network of cameras with leading them to Griffiths:"

The Menino administration blocked the wide use of cameras in this city on privacy grounds. I would like to see the Walsh administration do the right thing and start by placing cameras around troubled neighborhoods in discreet locations. What better way to spot gang activity, drug houses and other criminal behavior? The gunshot detector is simply a stupid idea. What good is it? Once the guns are shot, people can be dead. At least cameras would be a deterrent and provide evidence for catching perpetrators in neighborhoods where people are afraid to testify.
