Two arrested for tying man up in Franklin Park robbery

Boston Police report arresting two of three males they say tied up a man walking his dog through Franklin Park near the golf course Saturday afternoon. One of the suspects is 13.

Jamaica Plain News reports police are looking at connections between the alleged muggers and people sought for similar robberies on the path around Jamaica Pond the week before.

Police say the victim accompanied a friend to the Franklin Park Zoo entrance, but then continued into the park with his dog along a path near Jewish War Veterans Drive shortly before 2:30 p.m.

He observed the three suspects sitting on bench. As he continued walking, the three suspects began to follow him, eventually catching up and walking next to him. The three suspects then surrounded the victim and pushed him into the brush next to the path. The suspects, brandishing knives, bound both the victim's hands and feet before taking his possessions and fleeing.

The three then bounded off in the direction of Shattuck Hospital, police say.

Officers observed three individuals matching the descriptions of the suspects in the area of Chilcott Place in Jamaica Plain. Upon seeing the officers, the three suspects immediately fled. Following a brief foot pursuit, officers were able to apprehend two of the suspects in the area of Washington Street and Boylston Street in Jamaica Plain. Officers searched the area for the third suspect to no avail.

Rafael Motas-Pena, 21, and a 13-year-old, both from Dorchester, were arraigned today on charges of assault with intent to murder, kidnapping and armed robbery in West Roxbury Municipal Court.

Motas-Pena had bail set at $50,000, the teen at $10,000, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Innocent, etc.

I'm glad these guys got busted and I do hope they're linked to the pond muggings and that we don't have a whole cadre of creeps going around tying people up. I spend a lot of time in Franklin Park and a lot of time telling people that it's actually a safe and wonderful place to be--beautiful, calm, and maybe the only place you can go in Boston and see such a diverse range of ages, races, cultures, all out walking, jogging, playing games, etc. Jerks like this are what ruin urban places like this and feed people's fears. I hope too that the 13-year-old maybe gets a clue that he should straighten out and pursue a different career path.

Yes and I love running in Franklin Park too. When I'm running and I say "good morning" to folks they actually say good morning back and smile. Unlike at Jamaica Pond where folks just look at me weird. And the golf course is great too- fun, challenging and in much better shape then most public courses in the state.

And Sally did, too.

Despite the fear of crime by those who never set foot in Franklin Park, it was probably the nature of FP (my God, it is the most friendly place for a runner in Boston, as far as people saying "hi" to you goes) that hopefully spelled the end of this Emerald Necklace crime spree.

Thirteen years old? I hope they try him as an adult. If he can be robbing with the big boys, he can do time with them, too.

is like seventh grade. These robberies have pissed me off but he's a kid. No point in writing him off so young.

I also agree that words do not have meanings, and that we should casually dismember our system of justice in order to satisfy our own individual desires to see middle-school-aged kids subjected to inhumane punishment.

Whatever. Look, if it was shoplifting or graffiti I could say, "yeah he's just a kid". This is armed robbery, kidnapping, etc. If you're already on that by thirteen, it's only going to get worse.

I have a lot of friends and family who did all kinds of illegal stuff at that age and turned out okay. Bu the ones who were already pulling adult-level crimes never snapped out of it.

Something creepy looking with this Matos-Pena guy. Why is he with a 13 year old in the first place? This 13 yr olds loved ones should ask him some questions about what this grown man wanted with him besides for contributing to his delinquency.

In many European cities, old guys run squadrons of kid pickpockets. Parents will use their own kids for such purposes.

It is rarer in the US for a number of reasons, but it is an age old problem. Gangs leaders use underage kids to take out rivals (you're under 18 you won't be doin' any time, hey hey, come out and play!)
