that this was a "targeted shooting" as well, so we don't need to be concerned about it?

Unfortunately there are two gangs going at it in this particular neighborhood. Most likely targeted and not the best time to live or be around these areas because not of all of these guys have the best aim. May God bring peace.

if we live here? Not all shots fired reach their intended target, and we non-gang members really don't want to be killed by accident. We'd still be dead. Do we need to start in again with the police, elected official and neighbor meetings, to give the police enough support to go after the gangs? Didn't we already do that for long enough?

That living room was well known for its gang ties, and, sad as it is, many felt it was only a matter of time.

That living room had just turned its life around.

A living room just an ottoman and and end table away from its GED.

Probably not yuppie, because it's a block away from Mozart Street. Us city folk knew that to be a bad area since the 80s. You'll need to get a few more friends from Pembroke to move in to completely gentrify Hyde Square.

So yeah, probably a targeted shooting.

Mozart is still a notorious gang street but there are 2-3 bedroom condos selling for half a million bucks. Honestly, it's beyond me. I guess Whole Foods didn't transform the neighborhood completely.

Having lived around the corner for a decade, I'm not aware of significant gang activity on Mozart recently; certainly not a trend. The gentrification line continues to push slowly that direction, for good or bad. Most of the families in the neighborhood I know have been around for at least as long as we have, which is quite stable. Plus there are new condos at the other end of Wyman St. that are some of the highest price per square foot in JP.

If the location is correct, it's close to the market outside where another shooting happened about four years ago. Could well be a coincidence: random gun violence seems able to travel around JP pretty well.

but aren't aware of significant gang activity in the past few years? Do you mean literally on your block? It's not as if gangs stick strictly to whatever street they're named after but yeah--those tend to remain kind of an epicenter. And no, the violence that goes on still in JP is rarely random--a lot of is tied directly to these guys and other gang wars. http://patch.com/massachusetts/jamaicaplain/list-violence-tied-to-the-bo...

In any case, I'm not disagreeing about the gentrification--just think it's amazing that people would pay that much to live on a street where this crap is still going on.

The thing about gentrification that I feel is lost on the yuppies is the heartbreaking nature of it. I grew up a few blocks from Hyde Square. When I was FINALLY able to buy something, I couldn't afford the very house I grew up in! Or anywhere in the neighborhood I was raised by. Broke my heart.

And I know "white-flight" is being reversed and rich people are moving back and it's all cyclical and blah blah .. it still stings though.

(I know that had nothing to do with the shooting last night. White folks, if you're planning on moving near Mozart, plan on hearing gunshots. Bromley is like two blocks away. I'm pretty sure there were shots fired just now again in JP).

Wasn't it heartbreaking for the original residents seeing their neighborhood turn into a crime-infested cesspool, and finally having to sell their house for next to nothing?

As the article you reference says, there were major busts made in 2011 and 2012, involving people who *used to live* on Boylston St. who were feuding with people who *used to live* on Mozart St. That doesn't mean it's an "epicenter" for anything any more. And since we don't know the details of this shooting, it's a bit premature to play connect-the-dots.

Yes, shootings happen and have happened in JP. Big news. It's tragic for the people involved. It just doesn't deter others from living perfectly safe, normal lives on almost every street in the area. I would actually say Wyman St. is one of the hottest real estate areas in the whole of JP because of its convenience to the T, quality and relatively affordable housing stock, street width and parking access, traffic calming, and simultaneous access to both Whole Foods and local bodegas. It's tough to count how many houses have been built, renovated or sold in the last five years.

If the police said the guy came out and started to shoot random people for no reason, it means you probably have more of a chance of getting shot the next time than if the shooter was specifically targeting someone.
