Police: Bystanders come to aid of cop being beaten in Brighton

Boston Police report arresting a Belmont man yesterday after he started an attack on a Boston cop by throwing a nearly full beer can at his head.

Police say Patrick Lowry, 45, was drinking a beer and urinating outside the Skating Club of Boston, 1240 Soldiers Field Rd., around 6:30 p.m., when a BPD officer approached and told him to throw away the beer:

He instead suddenly threw it at the officer, hitting him in the head above his left eye. The suspect then immediately lunged at the officer, grabbing him, causing both men to fall to the ground and causing the officer to strike his head as they fell onto the pavement. A violent struggle then ensued, with the suspect punching and kicking the officer several times. During the fight, the suspect made several attempts to remove the officer’s gun from his holster. The officer was able to retain custody of his weapon but lost his radio as the two fought on the ground, rendering him unable to call for assistance.

Police say bystanders called 911 and that two of them joined the affray, restraining Lowry until additional officers arrived.

The officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment of head, neck and back injuries and was later released.

Lowry was taken to District D.14 for booking on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot) on a police officer, resisting arrest, open and gross lewdness and drinking an alcoholic beverage in public.

Innocent, etc.

What a D bag. Would have been easier to just throw the beer away. Pretty reasonable request from a Police.

He COULD have arrested the guy, but didn't have to. As you say, he chose to use his discretion not to. Most people, you'd like to think, take the hint and clean up their act, but this guy sounds like he's pretty hardcore antisocial.
