Police say gunman bites cop in vain escape attempt in Dorchester

A man once sentenced to three years in prison for fatally shooting his friend in the head by accident was arrested yesterday on a variety of gun charges after trying to elude a routine traffic stop, police say.

Boston Police report Rashard Monroe, 26, at first tried to drive away after police stopped him around 7:30 p.m. but that they quickly caught up to him again, in the area of Washington and Vassar streets:

The suspect immediately became combative and a violent struggle ensued. During the fight, one officer was bitten on his arm by the suspect and sustained a leg injury. The officers were eventually able to place the suspect in custody at which time they recovered a loaded 9mm Kel-Tec Model P11 handgun from the waist band area of his pants.

Monroe was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, second offense, carrying a loaded firearm, being an armed career criminal, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disturbing the peace and failure to stop for a police officer.

In 2009, Monroe was sentenced to three years in state prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter for te way he shot a friend in the head while playing with a loaded, unregistered gun in a Wainwright Street apartment.

Innocent, etc.

ummm, Massachusetts and our (revolving door) court system.

Don't you understand that there is good in everyone? In Massachusetts, everyone gets a second, and third, and fourth chance - even when they demonstrate and inability to distance themselves from illegal firearms while literally killing people?

Remember Edwin Alemany who killed that poor girl Amy Lord. This scumbag had well over 30 criminal charges to his record for everything from robbery to attempted murder - yet he was still able to walk the streets of Boston from Rozzie to Southie selling illegal EBT cards before murdering an innocent girl and dumping her body in Stony Brook Reservation.

Police do a fantastic job - but this is Massachusetts, and the court will not protect you.

Trust me, this won't be the last we hear of this knucklehead Rashard Monroe either. Count on it.

and the beat goes on . . .

What about the child molesters, rapist, and gropers? Or the drunk drivers? Theses are all people that target randomly and and don't discriminate. People don't just walk up in shoot anyone in this neighborhood. But the rapist, ECT.... They pick whoever they want. And guess what, those are the ones you should worry about because they get out asap. And live right next door.

But I wonder what the actual law is that allows something like that to happen

Some folks, at sentencing,

Some folks, at sentencing, are genuinely remorseful.
Some are not.
This young man, who I know, is genuinely remorseful.

Some gentle soul no doubt.

Did you leave the same exact comment as an anon on the original manslaughter story? In general I think people can be remorseful, and perhaps he was for killing a friend. But me thinks he's burned any sympathy bridges that may have been built.

3 years for murder? Back to terrorizing the streets!

Nice job judges!

The state can spend years and tons of resources trying to put a homeless domestic abuse victims which attempted to defend herself in prison until the US Supreme Court finally tells them to knock it off. Meanwhile murderous gang members get cut loose with minimal effort exerted.

"three years in prison for fatally shooting his friend in the head by accident "

Three years for killing a guy with a gun by 'mistake', is this real life? How long this time around? Someone better get the AG to make a new decree.

He was convicted of manslaughter. Manslaughter conviction typically gets you 3-5. this is true everywhere, not just MA. He was not treated with kid gloves. He should be put away fro a LONG time in the current case.
