At least Marty’s moving Boston foreward unlike previous Boston Mayor’s -delay delay delay for decades for decades for decades .. taller high rises are going up, Eastie is finally being recognized , Roxbury is coming up , cleaner and safer streets under Marty’s watch.

taller high rises are going up

Great. What actual Bostonian can afford to do anything more than look at them? This has been well documented.

Eastie is finally being recognized

You spelled "overdeveloped and priced out" wrong.

Roxbury is coming up

I'll leave this one alone, because I don't really know much about what's happening there.

cleaner and safer streets under Marty’s watch.

Clearly.

I Lived in Eastie too long and I’ve never seen city workers with bright vests on cleaning the streets and municipal parking lots after 7pm in the dead winter time also, I’m seeing this now and I was shocked, this is what I call dedication on Walsh’s part to cleaner streets. He is clearly the best choice for Mayor. And if he runs for mayor again , he’s got my vote.

Someone can afford them, but, yes, I agree - it is pretty well documented at this point across the Globe and other publications that all of the new apartments that are being constructed (regardless of price) are stabilizing rents/slowing their inflation.

What exactly should this new mayor do to stop these mostly gang related shootings? Specifics please.

-Boost BPD resources for anti-gang units
-Boost BPS resources for anti-gang after school activities and youth league sports
-Meet with the unionized building trades and tech/bio/medical/financial companies to increase the number of apprenticeships and internships available to high school students and maybe middle school career discovery camps.
-Work with federal authorities and the Suffolk County DA to make sure gang members face harsh justice and don't keep going through the 1-5 year with an ankle monitor revolving door
-Summon Chluthu from the basement of City Hall to devour the souls of the wicked
-Hold the BHA accountable for not working to evict known gang members and drug dealers up to no good in public housing and do the same for family members and girlfriends frequently harboring them off lease.
-Go after money laundering operations and fronts aggressively. A little forensic accounting goes a long way.
-Have ISD cite problem properties for code violations, board up abandoned properties to prevent squatting and drops, use quality of life policing to prevent gangs from having hangouts to base their operations from with impunity.

If your suggested plan of action was followed to the T you would be posting as an "anon" decrying these tactics as racist.

But maybe not exactly? I could sit here and throw suggestions out all day, but here's the thing: it's not my job to know how to do these things. I'm not an elected official. I don't have the political experience, connections, or knowhow.

But I do live and work in Boston, and see the things happening, both good and bad, every day. And honestly, the good is more status quo than anything.

Vote for a Mayor and City council that give a damn about maintaining the historic decrease in crime under Menino, while raising the issue till this mayor admits he has a problem and has a plan.

That'll work.

Why didn't the rest of us think of that.

Except make Boston even more unaffordable.

I don't have any suggestions, but I also don't think the mayor or the police are just ignoring the problem. I have a lot of faith in the commissioner, but he's only human.

Unfortunately, that's above Marty's pay grade.

...heart of the Back Bay, early on a Saturday night in an area packed with tourists. Way to go, Boston. They've been letting this whole area deteriorate, from Copley Square and the steps of the BPL down to Mass Ave. Better hope Amazon isn't watching.

Any have the math mind to run crime stats against the closing of Long Island, gang-related violence, and the broken windows theory? I don’t know who “they” is, but the western half of the Back Bay does feel grittier than in the past. Feelings aren’t facts, though. How can we show “them” there’s a growing issue?

up
Voting closed 0

through there often, haven't felt anything but safe near there. I know there was a recent shooting very close by, near the BPL, a couple of weeks ago, which surprised me.

I'd like to know: how do you feel it has deteriorated?

up
Voting closed 0

In terms of violence, there was a recent drive-by shooting from car to car on Mass. Ave.
There was a recent shooting attributed to road rage on Ring Road, I believe.
Then there are what used to be called quality-of-life issues, which have subsided somewhat in the bad winter weather but were ubiquitous all spring, summer, and fall:
Bucket drumming after 11 PM on Boylston near the Apple Store (in nice weather)
Unpoliced skateboarding on BPL Dartmouth Street place and in Copley Square
Loud unlicensed street bikes roaring up Boylston in packs, weaving and wheely-ing in and out of traffic, endangering pedestrians.
Public drinking, pot smoking, dealing on steps of BPL
People camping overnight on BPL stairs, the Old South Church front entrance, and that poor woman who sets up her sleeping quarters in the bus kiosk on the south side of Boylston at Dartmouth virtually every night, and then relocates to the inbound Copley Station when it opens.
Aggressive panhandling (and paid charity solicitors, I might add) everywhere, but particularly outside the CVS at Copley, and near the Wendy's.
Zero moving violation traffic enforcement -- yellow lights are green, and red lights are mere suggestion. Someone is going to get killed (like they already have been in the South End, which has it even worse). This is particularly galling since many if not most intersections have cameras. Why aren't they being used for enforcement, ticketing, fines?)
Obviously, none of these things are, in and of themselves, major issues or incidents. But they add up to a neighborhood in decline. This is a central showcase area for one of Boston's most important economic drivers -- tourism. And when you consider that this is going on when Boston's economy is booming, it doesn't bode well for the inevitable recession/building bust/bubble burst.

up
Voting closed 0

You could be describing any night from the early 1980's onward [I could go back much further if you didn't include bucket drumming]. Not sure I see the deterioration...

up
Voting closed 0

If the police arrested bucket drummers, skate boarders, panhandlers, skateboarders, they would be laughed out of court, labeled racists, and sued by the ACLU. If they evict the homeless from sleeping on grates, bus shelters, trains stations they will be labeled thugs and goons on social media. There is no political or police leader who will step on these minefields.

up
Voting closed 0

those minor inconveniences, part and parcel of city living. I agree that we could do with better traffic and parking enforcement, but this is not exactly a new phenomenon. Very few of the rest ever make me feel less safe, but to be fair, I'm a man: some of these doubtless feel more threatening to women, especially solo pedestrians. I do see your point that they can hurt tourism, gone completely unchecked.

Honestly, a 23% voter turnout is the result of this too. Walsh is nothing but a Mayor Carcetti in the flesh. I've had the unpleasant experience of seeing him in person and got qualms that reeked of bullshit and hubris from the guy. If BPD integrated more beat cops and persons of colors in the neighborhoods where these scumbags come from, way less of this would happen. And before you start to criticize me, I lived on one of the most violent streets in Grove Hall and got to see firsthand how beat cops who look like me developed good rapport with the community. So while the Grand Orange Doofus says something stupid all the way in DC and Walsh thinks he's a savior for speaking up, he doesn't realize how bad it's getting here.

No one is happy with the violence in Roxbury or Dorchester or Mission Hill. But it's not racist to react to and comment on incidents closer to home.

up
Voting closed 0

Actually it is racist. When this happens in Grove Hall, Roxbury and Dorchester, you see crickets in the comments section when the story runs on UHub. Now it's happening in your nice white section of Boston and you all want to tar and feather the mayor. You're out of touch with reality and you're a bunch of closet racists.

How about rehabilitating the offenders in the first place. I work first hand with what you people call gang members everyday and half the bs you guy put on the site you wouldnt say at all around them. How about trying to see why this is occuring and actually doing somethig about it.Helping raise money to change these guys? Helping the families of victims ? How about that I have a few programs any of you twitter fingers can come by and visit and actually see people transform their lives and becoming something better. Dont act like you care because its near BPL & Hynes, its been happening all over

Increase BPD resources, definitely. And give them full reign. Especially in Roxbury, Mattapan and Dorchester. Stop thinking that these neighborhoods have nothing to do with Faneuil Hall. If not we're going to turn into another Chicago.

Is doing a pretty good job.

A lot of the problem is the regression of city programs under Walsh that kept kids in schools, jobs, and combated the normal paths poverty puts people on.

Someone above dug Menino for the slower rising of shiney new million dollar towers. Sure. Mostly because conditions were attached to employ workers of less fortunate neighborhoods, create internships for city students to get them off the street, and they didn't push huge tax giveaways because the city needed that money for programs.

That hasn't been Walsh's focus these last five years. Courting CEOs with sweet talks of heliports and zero tax burdens seems to be his game.

up
Voting closed 0

Besides GE I can't think of any tax giveaways under the Walsh administration. Menino on the other hand gave tax breaks to Vertex and to get the Millennium Tower built.

up
Voting closed 0

Menino was the god of the corporate tax giveaway.

Marty has only done 2 major deals I can think of- GE and the Fenway air rights deal. Both VERY small relatve to the size of the benefits. I opposed the Fenway deal, but the GE deal may pay some dividends.

What programs did Walsh cancel that were in place under Menino? Menino was no better at enforcing employment quotas than Walsh.

Not touting Walsh, but give me Marty or give me Tom, same diff. Walsh does do a better job of getting housing developed in the neighborhoods.

Glad to see UHub is showing it’s racist undertones. Someone gets shot in Dorchester or Roxbury you usually see ZERO comments. Shooting in the Back Bay, 18 comments and counting.

up
Voting closed 0

The sad fact is people get shot in Dorchester and Roxbury quite often so when it happens in the Back Bay it's something new to discuss. You don't have to make everything about race.

up
Voting closed 0

That apparently, is the group think here.

Did you see this post from earlier?

Court rules teen will have to stand trial as an adult for murder of another teen at the Jackson Square T stop

Not a single comment. Two people get shot around the corner from McGreevey's or the wonderful Tesla store across the street and you damn skippy that is going to get traffic here on UHub a lot more than a bunch of kids in the hood clipping each other.

Not in their back yard, indeed.

The two brothers were watching the Pats game at Whiskeys before they got shot. Sadly one brother died. I'll be shocked if this post gets 50 comments total. Posts about cyclists wanting a protected bike track will easily draw 100 comments in a few hours. A pedestrian is struck and killed by a car in any neighborhood will get maybe 20 in a day or two. A person shot and killed in Dot, Mattapan, Roxbury will get less than 10. I think there are a lot of hardcore bike advocates who read uhub and they comment on what they are passionate about: bike infrastructure and bike safety where they live, work and cycle through.

up
Voting closed 0

I think you're missing the obvious, which is what drives media and reader engagement. A legal proceeding never gets much attention. Someone shot dead in plain view of a bar full of patrons is pretty sensational.

up
Voting closed 0

If anything, Mr. Gaffin is one of the only local media figures who feature these incident prominently. And as far as racism, I don't think that's the case with some of the lack of comments here. Most of the people here can honestly say they have no personal experience in the hood, so that's why I think they don't bother commenting.

Give them a good space saver post or some shit about bikes and they come out in droves to argue the same points over and over again and to what end?

up
Voting closed 0

Of course, when a serious incident happens in the Back Bay it gets 10 times more coverage than when it's happening in Dorchester or Roxbury, but here is a perspective from the "sh.th.le" part of the city: At our civic community meeting last week, the community officer reported that 2017 crime stats in district C11 (Dorchester) were down a full 10% from 2016, and that it has been going down from year to year for 7 years in a row. Unfortunately, shootings and murders remain an area that fluctuate and hasn’t followed that downward trend. Having lived a block away from notorious Geneva Ave. for 16 years, I can attest that today is a whole lot better than 2002 or 2012.

up
Voting closed 0

Actually, I was surprised at how little local tv news coverage it got this morning. The Patriots got the overwhelming majority of the coverage, followed by the weather. And then, after several commercial breaks, there was a brief mention of the murder on Boylston St., quickly followed by the usual obnoxious Dunkin Donuts 'news.'

Okay...
Lets see...
Commit a crime get caught.
Go to trial.
Plea bargain down to miz-de-meaner.
Cause DA has no clue or has an agenda.
Back on street.
Commit crime.
Get caught.
Rinse,repeat....
And yes it would help if you could stop having kids out of wedlock(insert historic word here for fatherlessness) and stayin in school...
