New Yorker charged as window-smashing would-be bicycle thief in the North End

Boston Police report arresting a New York man on charges he tried to steal a bicycle from a Commercial Street shop yesterday, threw paving stones through its window when he was foiled and then tried to kick and spit at police officers who caught up with him.

Police say Jared Collette, 25, of New York City, tried to steal a bike from Urban Cycles, at Commercial and Richmond streets around 10:30 a.m. An employee grabbed the bike back, Collette threw pavers through the windows and then fled, police say. Not long after, officers at Faneuil Hall Marketplace spotted somebody matching his description, police say:

When officers attempted to speak with him, he immediately took off running. Additional officers, help from Transit Police, assisted the units on scene and pursued the suspect up the stairs of City Hall Plaza. Officers eventually caught up to the suspect at the top of the stairs. Following a struggle in which the suspect attempted to kick and spit at officers, the male was placed into custody.

Police say Collette did the spitting thing again during booking.

He was charged with unarmed robbery, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and malicious destruction of property, police say.

Innocent, etc.

Those steps at City Hall can be a thigh-buster, especially if you've got police on your heels.

If I was you, Jared, I'd have stayed on Congress Street and then taken the right on Court Street but then again, I'm a local and lazy.
