Mentally disabled man was beaten up at North Station; police say they have one of his attackers

Transit Police report arresting one of two people they say repeatedly punched a "male with intellectual disabilities" in the face at North Station around 9 a.m. on Dec. 23.

Giovanni Medina, 38, of Dorchester, was arrested on Tuesday near the Government Center T stop, police say. The search for the woman who also took part in the attack continues, police say.

Innocent, etc.

Is very sketchy especially the rest rooms it has become a surrogate homeless shelter for those seeking refuge from the methadone mile.

So North Station has become South Station. Got it.

I can see why.. the bathrooms are down a side corridor that unless you're going to the ticketing office or the ProShop, you have no real reason to go down there.Quiet corners harbor things.

South Station.. at least the men's room is right in the main area, so it has eyes on it all the time. (still doesn't mean ppl don't camp out in the stalls). Even up at the bus station, its right in the rotund next to McD. Again, right in an big open area.

The Pro Shop moved years ago to the main concourse area, next to the new Hub Hall, both of which face the main waiting area.

Plenty of folks use that side corridor. Some head that way to cut through the West End Apartments to go to MGH, others to 125 Nashua St (off campus building owned by MGH) that is now a Covid test site, or to the Nashua Street Jail. Others make their way to the Lechmere shuttle busses that pick up on Martha Road.

Yes, North Station is sketchy but so is South Station. Drug use happens at both locations. The main difference is that I usually see more uniformed cops (BPD or Transit) in North Station (probably because of events at TD Garden).

That kind of trauma can be life changing for anyone. What is wrong with people? (sigh...)

If there was a visual MBTA police presence more often, I bet it would be safer with less shit like this happening.

I wonder what this is like at North Station.. I mean, how policing happens.

Remember unlike South Station, which is owned by the MBTA, North Station is not. It apart of the Garden, which is owned by The Delaware North Companies. Meaning it is a private building.

I am sure the MBTA has egress in their contract with Delaware North, which includes how Transit Police can patrol the station. Obviously they can't go upstairs into the garden. But

1) is their patrolling limited to the platform area?
2) Does it include the bathroom
3) Does T police even have permission to patrol (I would assume yes)
4) If so, do they work with the security contractor for Delaware North?
5) Who's turf is the bathroom then? ProSHop is next door, but the Amtrak ticketing office is across the hall.

I agree T Police should step it up. But my questions more are... can they?
