Orange Line seat-hog rage at Back Bay sends one to the hospital, shuts service

Transit Police report a guy taking up "too many seats" on an Orange Line train refused to yield any of the seats, which another guy tried to solve by whipping out a box cutter as the train pulled into Back Bay and slicing him twice in the chest around 3:30 p.m.

The alleged manspreader was taken to a local hospital with what police said were "superficial wounds" and a strong desire to say nothing to police, while the alleged ragee fled upstairs with a woman companion and ran across Dartmouth Street.

Orange Line service was halted as Transit and Boston officers raced to the scene. The train was taken out of service and driven to the Wellington yard for a closer look by detectives.

However, unlike the old cars, the new ones are equipped with cameras, much like buses are now. Wouldn't be surprised to see requests for info with still shots from TPD in the near future.

I don't want to minimize the seriousness of the stabbing, but we are now down to less than half the number of trains that were running this time last year. With the old trains, at least there were spares, but not so much with the new trains.

Best wishes for a quick and full recovery of the victim, that the perpetrators are caught, and for the return to service of the 1200 series trains.

According to NE Transit, the MBTA has 74 new Orange Line cars available for service, which works out to 12 trains total. So if one is removed, that leaves 11, which is more than they have been typically using of late.

I've taken to visiting this site to see how many trains are in service.

And checking to get the link, it's 7 again, so where the other 5 are is a mystery. Better call the Hardy Boys.

If there is a stabbing or a shooting on a train is the operator supposed to keep the doors closed so the suspects can't escape or is the operator supposed to immediately open the doors allowing the suspects to escape hoping that the bad guys will no longer be a threat to the other passengers.

Seems like keeping the door closed is a lot more dangerous since it locks people in with a violent crazy

There is no such thing anymore as new trains for us Orange Line regulars. Let's call them defective superseding trains. And already dissected in a chop shop to boot. They are no longer new. They are cheap and stupidly designed. Stop leaning on that button people! The ridges on the console in the corners aren't stopping me from claiming a makeshift seat with my ass cushioned with my yoga mat.

(My Latin is rusty -- what's the dative plural for "manspreader"?)

Manspreading was a common occurrence in the Roman baths.

Channel 7 News last night reported it as two teens but then they added the cutter fled with a woman. Kind of confusing that last part; Was it his mom?

He was 18 and she was 20. Or something like that.

You can’t use the term manspreader anymore. How do you know they identify as a man?

Take up more then one seat and you identify as a manspreader.

And no schools are putting out kitty litter.

People on Uhub need to stop having these "discussions".

that should be taken seriously.

But bye, sweetums. There are plenty of places on the Web you can get all faux-outraged about man-hating M&Ms and other things that aren't happening.

This is a very harmless fetish of zero interest to society given what my ER nurse relatives tell me they pulled out this week.

Kind of amazing that people asking for some dignity and respect causes so many other people to want to show their ass at every opportunity they can find.

People have created this nonexistent character for them to attack. This "liberal" boogieman doesn't exist except for the mind of certain media personalities and politicians.

Look at this thread. NO ONE claimed the term "Manspreading" was offensive or needed to be changed. Instead, someone "jokingly" responded to something which wasn't said. And others used that as a cue to attack other requests which are fairly reasonable when taken in context.

And no one person on the "left" speaks for everyone on that side, trans or otherwise.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

You can probably figure out why, but there are plenty of other places on the Web to let your inner paranoid out.

Was the train car SRO? Was the seated fellow preventing other folks from utilizing one of the seats? Or did the fellow occupying more than his fair share simply wind up being a catalyst for a person who was looking for a target to attack?

That the assailant was carrying a box cutter makes me think the guy was looking for any reason to be violent.

That of course raises the question of why does he need to be violent? It also helps make the case for tight regulation of other weapons. If we are willing to support a society that produces people who are raging then we need to protect ourselves from the inevitable.

The manspreader should have been carrying a boxcutter himself so that he could defend against the attack.
