DA: Gun-packing sexual harasser ordered held without bail after affray at South Bay movie complex; two of four daughters also arrested

A man is being held pending a dangerousness hearing on Thursday after he and two of his four daughters punched a security guard during a fight at the AMC Movie Theater at South Bay Friday night that started in front of Boston Police offices and after security guards asked him and his kids to leave because he was sexually harassing female workers, including asking them out on dates, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Freddie Bates, 47, with a criminal record that is already 25 pages long, was arraigned yesterday in South Boston Municipal Court on charges of carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, assault and battery, affray, trespassing and disorderly conduct, the DA's office reports.

According to the DA's office, police responded to the theater, 25 District Ave., around 8:25 p.m. on Friday on a 911 call from the theater:

Theater staff told officers that Bates, in the theater with his four daughters, made female employees uncomfortable with various comments, including asking them out on dates. Theater security asked Bates to leave after he became aggressive and started screaming profanities at one of the guards.

With Boston police on scene, Bates ran up to one of the guards and punched him in the face. The two engaged in a physical altercation. During this altercation, two of Bates’s daughters punched the guard. During the altercation, the guard’s firearm fell off his waistband and was later recovered outside in a balled-up jacket held by one of Bates’s daughters. Officers returned the firearm to the security guard after confirming he was properly licensed.

Upon searching Bates after his arrest, officers seized a Hopkins & Allen .22-caliber pistol loaded with five rounds. One of the two daughters who had earlier punched the security guard became irate seeing her father in handcuffs and spit at the guard.

The two girls, one 16, one 17, were also arrested . The younger was charged as being delinquent for larceny of a firearm, assault and battery, possession of a firearm without a license and possession of ammunition without a license, the DA's office says. The other was charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct.

Innocent, etc.

"a criminal record that is already 25 pages long" ... how many strikes and you're out is it?

It's starting to sound like the old Lafayette Place.

That must have been a family heirloom. Hopkins & Allen went bankrupt in 1916.

Speaking of family. Way to teach family values Freddie. Your daughters are learning from the worst.

Those female employees are probably about the same ages as his daughters. What a piece of trash.

Is it at least possible that this situation escalated because everyone overreacted to what the suspect initially did? Yes.

No. Most likely they came up to talk to him about his behavior that was clearly making people uncomfortable and let it go if he stopped but he became self righteous no doubt and started acting like a public asshole.
