Boy, 12, found shot to death in Mattapan; man charged with keeping a gun and ammo where the boy could access them

Victim identified as Savion Ellis.

Boston Police report finding a 12-year-old with a fatal gunshot wound at 35 Fessenden St. around 2:05 p.m.

Stanley Staco reports he was shot in the chest.

Walter Hendrick, 22, of Mattapan, was arrested on charges that include improper storage of a firearm to which somebody under 18 could gain access, police say.

Police add Hendrick, scheduled for arraignment Friday in Dorchester Municipal Court, was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

Fessenden Street is about a half mile from where 13-year-old Tyler Lawrence was murdered in January.

In 2014, a 14-year-old playing with a gun shot his 9-year-old brother to death on Morton Street.

Innocent, etc.

It’s a little unclear from the brief above, but the child was shot in his home according to BPD.

Two dogs were removed by the home, appear OK but shaken, and are being cared for by Boston ACOs.

Most useful fact about gun ownership:

"The researchers found that people who lived with handgun owners were 2.33 times as likely to become victims of homicide and 2.83 times as likely to die from homicides involving firearms. Among people killed at home, those living with handgun owners were 4.44 times more likely to be fatally shot than neighbors living in gun-free homes."

Those are OTHER people. I don't have a problem with having a gun in MY house. I'VE taught MY kids never to touch it. I will NEVER have suicidal ideations and go straight to my gun.

That this young man may have shot himself? The charges brought against the gun owner do not include any use of a firearm and no-one else has been charged either.

In any case; this is a very sad situation.
