The bagel hole in West Roxbury left by the closing of Panera in 2015 is getting closer to being filled, with "Coming Soon" signs sprouting at 1727 Centre St. for Local 338, which promises "New York style bagels" and organic gourmet coffee in the spot that was briefly a pizza/froyo place that replaced the Upper Crust that used to be there. The state of the Boston bagel is strong, one (overly?) enthusiastic writer boldly states.

When Faivish Pewzner last visited Boston, he was excited about many things. But the one thing he was most looking forward, was tasting the city's famous bagels. Boston is a creative town with an outdoor culture that loves good food. Art and music are really big here, and there are foodie spots everywhere you turn. From oysters, noodles, chicken, tuna, and egg salads, to a large variety of pastries, this city really has something for everyone. Over the last few years, Boston has been undergoing a bagel transformation. The city’s bagel bakeries have a lot to offer.

Wicked Local West Roxbury reports on plans for a bagel place in the same Centre Street block as Porter Cafe for a bagelry that would truck bagels "90%" prepared in New York, then cooked locally.

The as yet unnamed bagel place would join Bruegger's Bagels and Bagelville on VFW Parkway. Exodus Bagels is now churning out bagels just off Belgrade Avenue on the Roslindale line, where it plans a full-scale deli, and, of course, the Dunkin' Donuts on Spring Street and VFW Parkway sell bagel-like round breadstuffs.

Boston Restaurant Talk reports the impending opening of a new outlet that sells bagels and donuts.

No word if they will also sell arancini, pancakes, certain Chinese sticky buns and sourdough bread, but they should. And then they could call it Round the World or something.

Boston Restaurant Talk reports Einstein Bros. no longer occupies space at the MIT Coop, so don't waste time going there.

UPDATE, 12:38 p.m. Goal met.

Adam Hirsh, known for the bagels he sells at the Egleston Square farmers' market, hopes to raise $60,000 to turn the bagel bakery he's building off Belgrade Avenue in Roslindale into a full-fledged diner. Read more.

Eater Boston reports plans for a place that would sell both donuts and bagels in Davis Square have fallen through. No word if a Swiss-cheese emporium will take its place.

Exodus Bagels, which has been selling its wares at finer farmer's markets and pop-ups everywhere (or at least in JP and Roslindale) announced today it's found a permanent home in Roslindale - in space formerly occupied by the Tables of Contents catering service next to the Bellevue commuter-rail stop off Belgrade Avenue.

Adam Hirsh of Exodus Bagels, best known for its stand at the Egleston Square farmers' market, reports he's hoping to lox in a lease on a permanent location in Roslindale:

I just gave a Landlord 24 hours to agree to my final counter offer on a storefront for Exodus in Roslindale.

Exodus recently had a pop-up bagel sale at Redd's.

Line for bagels in Roslindale Square

You don't often see people lining up for anything in Roslindale Square, but as roving UHub photographer Chris Dagdigian found, an Exodus Bagels pop-up at Redd's in Rozzie this morning brought out the bagel-starved Roslindalians:

"Hope this encourages them to open a storefront," he says.

Adam Kessel reports that Exodus Bagels will be doing some pop-up bagel sales at Redd's in Rozzie on Washington Street this Saturday morning. You may recall how last month, the Chubby Chickpea did several shakshuka Israeli brunches at 7 Star Bistro. Is a deli popup far behind?

Giant Party Bagel in Newton

This photo, taped by the cash registers at Rosenfeld's in Newton Centre, never fails to crack us up.

Is Giant Party Bagel missing, the victim of some horrible bagelnapping? Or is it just boasting: Look at this, look at it! Giant Party Bagel doesn't mess around, it takes no prisoners and it's large and in charge. But imagine the tub of lox spread that goes with it.

Daniel Guzman asks:

Trying to crowdsource a place in the immediate Boston area where Montréal-style bagels are sold. Any ideas?

By adamg - 1/31/15 - 11:06 am

The bagels, of course, would be artisanally New York style, carefully crafted out of "well sourced ingredients." Boston Magazine introduces us to Adam Hirsh, who's going to start out using an unidentified pizza place's ovens to bake his bagels overnight (hmm, same old bagels?) while he looks for a more permanent storefront of his own.

A disgusted citizen complains about noshers getting their fix at Boston Bagel Co.:

Bagel addicts double parking at this busy intersection. This is a public safety issue and somebody is going to get hurt trying to cross here.
