Barren cheese case at Chestnut Hill Wegmans

Molly the roving UHub photographer was at least mildly, if not sharply, surprised to see how barren the packaged-cheese case at the Chestnut Hill Wegmans was this evening. Are shoppers there bigger fans of grilled cheese than French toast, or is this just one of those general supply-chain issues that are all the rage these days and nothing at all to do with the Saturday storm?

Chris Faraone pens a paean to the people doing their best to keep their stores' shelves stocked in these trying times.

From the cashiers, to the meat and fish department workers, they’re all brave souls as far as I’m concerned, along with anybody else working in public while most people stay at home.

No more sanitizing wipes at Wegmans

The Chestnut Hill Wegmans was completely out of sanitizing wipes this morning - and a sign indicates they have little hope of getting more. But they did have plenty of bleach, Pledge and Windex.

Empty cheese shelves at Westwood Wegmans

Tim Colby shows us the cheese shelves at the Westwood Wegmans tonight.

Suz adds:

lol, that is what I bought for nacho's and beer. If I am going to freeze, I am going to be happy.

Not so much because of Thursday's storm but because the weekend storm already has the National Weather Service bringing out the ALL CAPS OF DOOM about a storm that just might LEAVE A CONSIDERABLE MARK ON OUR REGION.

Meanwhile, we've discovered that Wegman's challah, while no match for Cheryl Ann's or Rosenfeld's in the stand-alone taste department, does OK in French toast or, if you're sick of that, cheesy toast (same basic thing, but cheese instead of sugar).

Newton Police report they are drawing a blanc so far in their search for two thieves with a nose for expensive wines at the new Wegmans on Rte. 9:

Approximately $10,000 worth of wine has been taken. Each bottle is valued over $1,000. Two bottles taken on 6/12/14 and 6/13/14 were 2006 Mouton Rothschild.

If they can't catch the man and woman red handed, police are hoping somebody who knows them will pour out some tips at 617-796-2104.

Stationery aisle at the new Wegmans

The one quiet place in all of Wegmans today: The greeting cards/stationery aisle.

If you've ever been to the Roche Bros. in West Roxbury, you know they have a pretty impressive selection of ready-to-go meals, cheeses and the like.

There's a new ready-to-go supermarket in town, and it makes Roche Bros. and the newish Star Market in Chestnut Hill, which has its own food-to-go area, look like little delis. Take what you're used to at those stores and triple their size and you've got the Wegmans on Rte. 9, which opened today where the Omni Foods used to be.

It appears the legislative wrangling that has been stalling activity on Beacon Hill since August is finally over. This afternoon, Westwood's home rule petition to allow an off-premises beer and wine license for potential Westwood Station tenant Wegmans, was passed in the House after Canton Representative Galvin dropped his objections.
