A federal judge this week sentenced a member of Dorchester's Ashmont Street gang to seven years in federal prison after he admitted that he was in possession of a gun and ammunition he shouldn't have been since he was on parole for an earlier gun-running sentence - as well as being in possession of saleable quantities of cocaine. A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted Mary Fox, 42, of second-degree murder for the stabbing death of Michael Dezrick in Clifford Playground near Massachusetts Avenue and Shirley Street on Aug. 3, 2020, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. Read more.

The Zoning Board of Appeal today rejected plans to replace a one-family house with a six-unit condo building and to create a rear parking lot for that and an existing three-family home on Dorset Street in Dorchester in large part because the proposed eight-space rear parking lot would completely eliminate the two lots' rear yards. Republicans in the First Suffolk district (state Sen. Nick Collins's district) who vote during the March 5 primary will get to decide who represents them on the Republican State Committee - one man and one woman.

On the woman's side, the candidates are Elizabeth Hinds-Ferrick and Lori Kauffman, both of Dorchester. Read more.

Sign alerting Star Market shoppers to an impending Starbucks

Roving UHub photographer Michael Piccirilli alerts us to the impending Starbucks at the Lower Mills Star Market, 4 River St., on the Mattapan line. Starbucks also recently opened a standalone union-organizing opportunity on the other side of Mattapan, at 850 River Street just over the line in Hyde Park.

If the Star Market Starbucks is like the one at the West Roxbury store, it will be more of a kiosk with a few tables than a full-fledged outlet.

Suffolk County prosecutors who plan to use cell-tower data to place a suspect in a 2015 Dorchester home invasion, murder, shooting and arson at the scene of the crime won't be able to use data from the man's phone that seems to also place him at the location, the Supreme Judicial Court ruled today. Boston Police report officers who stopped a man for running a red light at Bowdoin Street and Geneva Avenue in Dorchester around 3:35 a.m. arrested him after noticing he was packing what turned out to be a gun loaded with 15 bullets. Read more.

The BPDA today sued the owners of the building that's now home to the Savin Bar + Kitchen and 14 apartments on Savin Hill Avenue in Dorchester, saying that while they agreed in 2018 to rent one of the apartments as "affordable" for at least the next 30 years, they have consistently rented the unit for more than allowed. A pedestrian was taken away in critical condition after being hit by Engine 24 on Bowdoin Street near Geneva Avenue in Dorchester around 12:25 p.m.

Two ambulances were summoned to the scene, one for the victim and one for firefighters on the truck, which is based in Grove Hall.

Rise Together, one of two developers behind a project to bring 120 residential units, office space and a new marina to Dorchester's Port Norfolk today sued the other developer, CPC Ericsson, for what it says is its refusal to pay a consulting firm that helped ensure the new buildings would be energy efficient and resistant to climate change.
