The challenges faced by the Boston housing market have been well documented in 2020. The pandemic has caused massive shifts in urban population distribution in metropolitan areas all across the country, and Boston is no exception. It effectively took one of the nation’s hottest real estate markets and caused it to come to a grinding halt as apartment vacancies soar all over the city.

Live Boston reports a gun battle between the occupants of two cars extended over three blocks in the area of Morton and Norfolk streets shortly before 1 a.m. As many as 15 shots may have been fired. No people hit, but at least one house and several cars were hit by the gunfire.

The new, but still temporary, look of Cummins Highway, coming soon.

A city pilot aimed at making Cummins Highway safer by reducing the number of lanes from four to two and adding dedicated bicycle paths will be extended from Wood Avenue to American Legion Highway by the end of the month - as the city looks at more permanent changes along the thoroughfare - a Public Works project manager says. Boston Police report arresting Willis McGhee, 50, on charges he punched and kicked a 72-year-old man in a robbery at 30 Fremont St., off Babson Street in Mattapan, around 6:50 p.m. on Sept. 10. Read more.

Boston firefighters are currently at Landscape Express at 415 American Legion Highway, where its landmark mulch pile has caught fire. A ladder truck has been brought in to try to spray it down from the top; the company has been asked to send somebody in with a front-end loader because Mt. Mulchmore will need to be taken apart to get to the inner flames. Also, engine trucks have to line up to relay water from a hydrant; the pile itself has no nearby hydrants.

Boston Police report arresting people from Hyde park, Quincy and Roxbury on gun charges last night after they allegedly ran a red light at Norfolk and Flint streets in Mattapan in a car that matched the description of one fleeing a Mission Hill shooting earlier in the day. Read more.

I've always enjoyed exploring Boston on foot, especially gardens and smaller roads. During the quarantine we've explored more of Roslindale, West Roxbury, Hyde Park and Mattapan than before. Everywhere we walk, we find unpaved roads. Read more.

The Massachusetts Appeals Court today upheld the armed-robbery conviction of a man who pleaded guilty to a 2011 gunpoint holdup in Mattapan, even though the drug convictions that stemmed from the same arrest had earlier been overturned because the drugs had gone through the tainted hands of state chemist Annie Dookhan. Boston Police report a man was found shot at 4 Hazelton St., off Blue Hill Avenue, around 9 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Isaias may only be giving the Boston area a glancing blow, but it's enough to snap trees like matchsticks on the Mattapan Line between Milton and Butler and on the Riverside Line near Longwood and Newton Highlands. Buses have replaced the Mattapan trolley and D Line trolleys from Kenmore all the way to Riverside. Read more.
