Our Dumb Criminals: Again with the frozen shrimp

Boston Police report arresting some guy at the Freeport Street Stop & Shop last night on charges he tried to leave the store without paying for the 10 bags of frozen shrimp in his cart (shrimpnappers seem to get netted pretty easily in this town; cops must have their antennae up for them).

Also dumb: The dudes allegedly racing - at speeds of up to 100 m.p.h. - on Columbus Avenue around noon yesterday. Cops caught a break - and one of the drivers - when he turned onto a dead-end street at the Bromley-Heath development and suddenly had no place to go.

Finally, click on the first link to read about an impending AARP member allegedly caught holding burglarious tools (to wit: a screwdriver) after a police captain noticed what appeared to be a guy trying to break into a car at Ipswich and Boylston.

Shrimp Thief Nabbed Outside Supermarket

Yesterday, around 5:15 pm, District 4 officers responded to a radio call at Shaw’s supermarket at 53 Huntington Ave. Upon arrival, officers spoke to the Loss Prevention Officer (LPO) for the supermarket who stated that he had observed a suspect, via closed circuit television, put some shrimp in a shopping cart, and proceed to walk around the store before putting the shrimp down the sleeves of his coat and then proceeding out the door. The suspect, Jonathan K. Bartie, 48, of Boston, was apprehended outside the store and brought back to the LPO, who recovered 4 bags of shrimp. He is being charged with Shoplifting.

This is what I see:

WRONG PLACE TO STOP-N-SHOPLIFT

At about 8:00pm, on Tuesday, October 16, 2007, an officer performing a paid detail on Area C-11 (Dorchester) at the Stop-n-Shop on Freeport Street observed an individual exit the store pushing a shopping cart filled with items. According to witnesses, the individual pushing the cart did not pay for the items. A search of the shopping cart produced, among many things, 10 bags of frozen shrimp. When officers asked the suspect to produce a receipt for the goods in his shopping cart, the suspect stated that he did not have one. Officers arrested Shane Whitsey, 36, of Boston and charged him with Shoplifting.

Anonymous is confused. The incident at 53 Huntington occured nearly 8 months ago (well, 20 months if you believe the typo in that BPD blog entry title). adamg linked to the old Universal Hub post in today's update to show that stealing frozen shrimp isn't a novel idea.

A lot o' people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch o' unconnected incidents 'n things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.
