Setback in the effort to gentrify Kenmore Square
By adamg on Sun, 11/18/2007 - 7:49pm
Mats Tolander discusses the recent closing of Truly Jorg's:
... It's definitely a set-back for the upscale vision of the post-ruffian so-called new Kenmore Square. The main problem for the new square is that is has more or less the same demographics to work with as the old one: Students, Red Sox fans and Lansdowne Street revelers. ...
It doesn't help, he adds, that the square still looks like a giant hole in the ground with metallic whale bones sticking out of it.

metallic whale bones
'metallic whale bones'... ha! Most accurate description yet! So much for sticking with the historical character of the neighborhood.
Too true
There were lots of things that helped in Truly Jorg's demise.
-Location - Even when they had their chalkboard out on the street, you had to know to look down the steps for the bakery.
-Price - Some of the pastries were well-priced, but others seemed exorbitant.
-Staff - I saw the chef in there a few times, but mostly I saw staff who weren't sure how to operate the cash register.
And yes, the whole square is a disaster area. And the cops "helping" to detour traffic around the construction? I've been waved into oncoming traffic by one cop, so I'll leave my crossings up to my own intuition from now on.
