I cannot believe that Home
I cannot believe that Home Depot has let this get this bad. My wife will not shop there because of the mouse infestation. It's not just bird seed - it is the lawn seed area too. They must have lost numerous customers due to their inability to properly store bird food and lawn seed. Also, this problem has been going on well before the construction on the parkway started. At least three of four years.

Birds, Too
At least, in the Watertown store.
MY WIFE and I were there about a week ago and saw three or four extremely smart sparrows who had taken up residence in the bird seed aisle. They were dive bombing the sacks of seed, then heading up to the rafters as soon as anyone got near them.

For the birds
I'm an infrequent Westie Depot shopper, never seen mice, but then again, I never buy birdseed, but the birds chirping way up there in the rafters are one of the highlights of any trip.
Birds in Watertown
They have had birds in the Watertown store for years.I've always kind of liked it. It was like being in a zoo. I think they had more birds than Franklin Park Zoo.Maybe the birds are keeping an eye on the measuring pencils. They had quite a problem over there with people stealing the pencils.
Several things;
First of all, birds are way different than mice...they're not a type of vermin.
Secondly, if stores do get enough complaints about rodent problems from their customers (and it sounds like they have), they should be investigating the situation, and, if it's found to be true, they should fix the problem as soon as they can.
Vermin
are 'pests' or 'nuisances', which pigeons certainly can be.
Pigeons on the grass
Alas.
I don't recall pigeons inside the Home Depot, just little brown finchy things. But the other day, we did see a pigeon waiting for the train at State Street.
But then,
mice and rats pose a far greater danger to humans and other animals alike, precisely becausa they're so dirty and they wander around in sewers and whatnot.

Now, having said that, I think that birds can potentially be a bigger problem than mice. After all, no mouse (unless he's extremely brave and talented) is going to shit on your head.
I don't know the percentages, vis-a-vis disease-carrying birds and disease-carrying rodents. However, the latest big scares have involved fowl-bourne nasties, as opposed to the plague.
(Just for the record - equal time and all - pigeons are some of the least disease-carrying birds around. Their rep as dirty is greatly exaggerated.)
