Market Basket fanboys

Yes, the local supermarket chain has some serious fans, like here (check out the photos of Market Baskets) and here. Also check out the forum where Market Basket employees discuss the gross things customers do.

how about the disgusting things employees do. like last sunday, when one deli worker was coughing and sneezing like she had SARS, and not changing her gloves, while handling product?

Since discovering the fabulous Somerville Avenue Market Basket, I've become a big fan and bought many snacks there. Need to plan trips there carefully, as it's just too crowded at many hours of the day.

This page lists 110 different snacks bought at Market Basket:

so those websites seem to be woefully out of date, the journal on the 2nd one hasn't been updated since 2005. as usual, a fad little project for someone and he's let it fall by the wayside.

i shop at market basket exclusively because it is the only local market that doesn't F around with prices for members/non-members. i will NEVER go to stop and shop again... i ran in to grab some chicken to take to a friend's BBQ last summer and they wanted 9 dollars a pound, or 3.99 a pound for members of their little shopper card program.

i asked the manager what the deal was, and he said that i could just become a member. but i didn't WANT to join anything. i didn't NEED to join anything, i just wanted a container of chicken. well, i could use the one time GUEST membership they have at the register... but i said he was missing my point.

buying food should just be easy. go to market, pick something up, end of story. no membership, no stupid crap, no scads of stupid coupon based receipts that you just throw out anyway... it's such a stupid process and a total waste of energy.

so demoulas and market basket stores (you know, they're not the same... they used to be but now they are 2 different companies...) don't piss me off with these things, and the prices are a lot less, and we live happily ever after in the end.

Wow, what a stir-up over nothing.

1) "Signing up" is free and doesn't require a credit history. You can call yourself "Abe Lincoln" and put your address at "1 Poppycock Lane" if you want.

2) I have never been to a register where the checkout person didn't have some generic card hidden under their cash drawer waiting to swipe for the people who don't sign up but still want the "member" discounts.

3) You even knew about #2...and were just grandstanding. It's a supermarket, not a Tea Tax.

Johnny's Foodmaster, found in Somerville, Mefuh, and Ahhlington (and elswhere), doesn't do the card thing either. They also have a fully unionized workforce for those who care, as well as MB compatible prices. Hanneford doesn't do the card thing either, if you can find one of those. (the grocery shopping options are about all I miss about commuting to Lowell.

As for information gathering, I'm not sure how accurate the systems can be at predicting what an individual's purchases will be. When in PDX when my kids were still in diapers, I borrowed my then single brother's Safeway card when I went to buy groceries for my folks' house and other supplies. He got some interesting coupon offers for quite a while after.
