The scenic way to work

Thanks to a downed electric line somewhere around Ruggles and Back Bay, commuter rail is all bolloxed up this morning. Coming in from Providence, they sent us onto the "Dorchester Line" (I didn't even know there was one!), which took us around those two stations, much to the consternation of those who planned to get off there.

Even without stops, we're still 15+ minutes late to South Station. I wonder how long it'll take to fix this mess!

Here's their advisory:

Commuter Rail Franklin/Forge Park, Providence/Stoughton and Needham Lines- are expecting 15-20 min delays due to amtrak overhead wire/power problem between Back BAy and South Station. Trains will not service Ruggles Station. Customers are directed to use Back Bay Station and utilize the Orange Line if needed. Please allow extra time for your commute.

My usual train (from Stoughton) did just as Oddjob60 described, therefore not coming to Hyde Park at all. Instead, they made the Franklin train stop, which usually expresses to Ruggles. It also stopped at Ruggles, so I'm not clear on what the alert means about having to take the Orange Line from BackBay, especially since any train diverted via the Fairmount line wouldn't stop there, either.

Still, all in all, I thought it was a decent response to a problem that has nothing to do with the MBTA for once.

Like, tells Ruggles what a bad day it had with all these nasty commuters and rotten rails? ;-)

I thought only the trains in Thomas the Tank Engine could express themselves ...

My train was supposed to arrive at South Station at 8:40 this morning, but didn't until about 9:05. When we went through the Dorchester stops all the people who were waiting for those trains got on ours, crowding the hell out of it. The trains they were supposed to be on must have been empty.

According to MBTA.com, the Fairmont trains were canceled, most likely to make room for the Stoughton/Providence trains.

It was a little bit late (something like 7:13 or so), and even with the wait for an outbound back to Providence, it was relatively smooth sailing, albeit slow between Morton Street and Uphams Corner.

Of course, I really wanted to take the 6:49 into Back Bay, but that got scotched because of the wire problems.
