DA: No political overtones to Romney break-in; just a couple of guys with some beer and a crowbar

Bradley.

Sauer.

Two Cambridge men pleaded innocent today to charges they broke into Mitt Romney's national campaign headquarters and tried to make off with an iMac computer.

Daniel J. Bradley, 28, and Michael J. Sauer, 30, both of Cambridge, are charged with breaking and entering at night with the intent to commit a felony and possession of burglarious instruments.

Sauer is also charged with possession of an open container of alcohol for the two open bottles of Bud that allegedly spilled out of the duo's car when they were arrested early this morning in the parking lot at 585 Commercial St.

Suffolk County DA Dan Conley said in a statement:

Judging by the facts as we understand them, there don't appear to be any political overtones to this case. As with any break-in, we'll proceed according to the evidence and the law.

According to prosecutors, a security guard at Romney headquarters (Ed. note: Unknown if his last name is Wills) called police when he saw the two on a surveillance camera attempting to steal computer equipment from a back office:

Officers removed Bradley from the front passenger seat and Sauer from the driver's seat; as they did so, Conley said, two open Budweiser bottles fell to the pavement.

Police say they recovered a three-foot crowbar and an 18-inch pry bar from their car.

Bradley's bail was set at $3,000; Sauer's at $2,000. The Cambridge Chronicle reports on Bradley's lengthy criminal record.

Innocent until proven guilty.

The story surprises John Daley - not the part about the alleged criminal masterminds being unable to get out of the parking lot, but the part about them allegedly getting caught carrying a Mac out of Romney's office: I would have pegged him as a Windows XP type of guy.
