The hypocrisy of West Roxbury's morals squad

There are several odd things about Roslindale resident Robert Joyce's campaign to rid West Roxbury of the Boston Phoenix.

For starters, there's the fact that he lives and works near Roslindale Square, where the Phoenix adult section is just as exploitive of women as it is in West Roxbury, and yet he's crusading to protect West Roxbury. NOTE TO BOB JOYCE: I stopped by the Roslindale branch of the BPL yesterday and they have copies of the Phoenix available. And they're right by the front door, where any impressionable young girl could grab one, take a look at the ads and instantly decide to become a prostitute!

But why just the Phoenix? Does Bob Joyce realize what you can see - at no additional charge - on Comcast On Demand, which is available in West Roxbury? And surely, the Amazing store just over the town line in Dedham has far more hard-core exploitation going on than ads in the back of the Phoenix. Where's the public profession of outrage?

Heck, the West Roxbury public library has a copy of the Kama Sutra (updated by Deepak Chopra, no less) right there on the shelves where any young woman could see it and fall prey to licentiousness (I checked; it's on the same shelf as a guide to sex for teenagers and, gasp, a book that shows an unwed teenage mother with a smile on her face instead of in agony as the flames of Eternal Damnation rise behind her).

Oh, and while the West Roxbury library had no copies of the Phoenix in the front lobby last Saturday, it did have oodles of copies of Stuff@Night, the cover of which consisted largely of a clearly exploited young woman wearing only a black negligee and a stole.

And what if I told you there was a free publication, filled with sexually exploitive ads of women selling their companionship, that was delivered to every single household in West Roxbury. Bob Joyce would be up in arms, no?

Strangely, no. Over at the Transcript, Wayne Braverman describes what happened when a reporter asked Joyce what he was going to do about this outrage, otherwise known as the Escort section of the Verizon Yellow Pages for Boston (pages 451-462 of the 2007 version):

... He didn't really seem to want to talk about it. He told the reporter that she would have to have a separate meeting to discuss it because it was too "complex" to discuss it there. He also told her the ads in the phone book were not like those in the Phoenix. ...

So the question really should be not whether Bob Joyce is trying to protect the fair sex, but why he hates the Phoenix so much. Setting himself up for another run for public office?

Didn't I see him last night at the
"Girls Gone Wild" event? I think he
was the one wearing a lampshade on his
head.

Of course he is getting ready for another run. Marian Walsh is "this close" to becoming a judge. Joyce is getting all his ducks is a row for another shot at her seat (no pun intended).

By the way...he is not a bad guy.

I really doubt he's going to win running against the Phoenix.

It would be the Impossible Dream to rid the neighborhood of all smut.....it is too late. Kids go to their rooms and get all the dirt they want on the 'net. We can never go back to innocence, and it's so sad for the children.

Bob may have good intentions, but he will have to fight every day of his life....and he will not succeed on this planet gone wild.

Are you implying there is something wrong with sex and the human body?

Noooooooooooo! What makes you say that? There would be no human bodies without it.

So I imagine there was just sarcasm in your post that I didn't pick up on. If so, my apologies.

I don't like the "adult personals", so I either pick up (what I term) a "smut-free Phoenix" at MIT (The Phoenix doesn't include the adult personals as part of campus editions), or I leave the adult personals in the Phoenix newspaper box (if I'm forced to pick up a Phoenix off-campus).

I much prefer to burn the entire paper if I find one section objectionable. Also, if I see something on TV that I do not like, I prefer to turn it off with a sledgehammer's blow, rather than the remote.

I wish someone was watching out for those poor, exploited Back Bay boys up there.

Maybe next he'll collect all library and phone books he finds objectionable and burn them in the square. It'll be Bebelplatz all over again!

A UH record?

Wouldn't it be great if Bob Joyce would shut his pie hole and leave us alone in 02132? He's so damn annoying.

Did he ever picket Gary's Liquors? Such a tool. Go picket the offender not the businessman who gives it to people who want it.

Let's show up at Joyce's place of work and picket his ass until he promises to mind his own neighborhood, not ours.

Just goes to show, some liberals like Joyce (I'm a liberal so don't get your knickers in a bunch) are just as bad as conservatives who go around telling everyone else what their standards should be (how to live.)

Joyce is a liberal? Only if Torquemada is your idea of a liberal.

Joyce is just like all the other conservatives who go round telling people how to tlive their lives.

Joyce has so ever politely informed me that he will be picketing on the sidewalk next to the VFW Parkway on March 29, 2008 from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm. By the way, the Post Office on Center St. has put the Phoenix box back outside again. Regardless of how many times, or how long Joyce wants to picket, I WILL NEVER, EVER give in to him!
