Go, Dan, go!

Suddenly, Dan Grabauskas is everywhere - and not just on PA systems 'neath the streets of Boston. Today, the daring T general manager vows to go after subway fare evaders. Sure, it's roughly two years after legitimate riders first started complaining about how easy the new fare system made evasion, but better late than never. Maybe next year, he'll even figure out that people evade fares on the trolleys, too.

Fare enforcement on the E line appears to consist of the driver now strenuously stating that if you do not have a monthly pass, you need to come to the front and pay. Riiiight.

Why can't the MBTA go to those tube that they have in other cities? They're enclosed platforms which among other things, provide shelter- but also you have to pay to enter. Then, train pulls up, all the doors open, and boom, everyone steps on/off and you're done. Y'know, kind of like, gasp, a subway station! And here's a tip, since they'll be nice to be inside, people won't mind walking more than 100 feet, so you can cut down on the number of stops on the green lines (thus speeding up service and cutting down on wear and tear on the cars.)

Also, Dan: why do we still have CharlieTicket based student, senior, and weekly/monthly passes? It's been more than a year since the Charliecard was rolled out. From what I can tell watching people on the bus, all you have to do to get a free ride on the bus is flash your old Charlieticket pass and the driver will wave you on.

What also seems to work well: having a CharlieTicket which has become unreadable, and thus they get the benefit of the doubt AND make everyone else wait while their card is sucked in and out of the farebox reader repeatedly as the machine tries to read it. I've lost track of how many "indie" kids I see using this method; every single one has a proud smirk on their face as they walk away from the driver, not paying a dime to The Man.

A few days ago, when some hipster thought it'd be hip to hop on at the rear doors of the bus and I told the driver. The driver's response was "oh, yeah, they do that all the time." How about stopping the bus and kicking his big-headphoned head onto the street?
