Why you should care about some dispute between Sterling and Clinton over water

Well, beyond the fact that Sarah Schweitzer wrote about it for the Globe, or that it involves a giant multinational wanting to suck out some precious groundily fluids to make bottled water in Framingham (at the same industrial-park plant where it bottles Poland Spring, because Framingham is what it means to be from Maine).

No, you should care because, as Lance informs us, the water would come from a reservoir known as Wekepeke, and that's pronounced "Weekee-Peekee" and that's just too glorious a name not to say over and over again.

We used to swim there as kids! It’s an old abandoned reservoir up in the woods near justice hill that used to service Clinton and Leominster. We used to go jumping of the rope swings, drinking beers and smoked weed up around there.

But it’s rather small, and I’m not sure how long this thing would last out if a bottling plant started sucking up water. The lake itself would drop 6-7 feet by itself in the summer heat, now imagine the damage to the water tables if someone started sucking out millions of gallons?

Then there’s the issue that most people in that area are not serviced by town water, but personal wells that run off that aquifer, so what of them once a plant starts to eat up all the water?

If you saw the lakes in question, while they are clean waters, they’re lakes and have your normal lake water problems (fish poop, algae, dead leaves). It’s no “crystal clear spring”!

(PS, I had sex in it once w/ a HS girlfriend!)

How’s them bottles of water now? ;)
