Eight acres of buildable land becomes available in South Boston

And in the seaport district, no less. The Boston Business Journal reports that the U.S. Army Reserve is moving a training and office facility to Virginia and so is putting the land and buildings - split among 13 parcels off Summer Street next to the Convention Center - up for sale.

Wouldn't this be perfect for the FBI? They are looking for space down there.

Problem solved!

There are a lot of parking lots and other land there which could have been sold off a long time ago, but the Barnes building is not just an Army Reserve training facility. It's more like the Pentagon - New England branch.

There are a lot of offices of Defense agencies in it. Defense Contract Management Agency is there to oversee military contracts. It is also the place where recruits are tested, given physicals and sworn in, and the recruiting commands are headquartered for the region.

I suppose things can be moved to other places, but there aren't many military facilities left in New England.

I suppose the US Government is in the same place as the Archdiocese - has to sell off valuable property to stay solvent.

I miss my old jogs down Summer Street, where I'd see a uniformed fellow or two around the "Porthole Building" (my name for the Barnes) and give them the sexy eye. Those were the days.

It seems like there is a general slow crawl southward of military bases. Just like all the manufacturing jobs, years ago.

I've always liked it because of the portholes - being right in the middle of the waterfront district and all (I admit, however, I've never given a sexy eye to any uniformed fellows down there).
