Filene's project now on hold

The Boston Business Journal has the scoop on what could be Boston's second major hole in the ground (would have been the third, except that hole in the ground down Washington Street in Chinatown was filled in).

Filene's Basement had a long-term, pre-existing retail lease on this site. The developer was supposed to allow them to return in 2009. If site conditions do not allow this to happen, the developer has breached the lease. I hope they lose the resulting lawsuit.

What are you counting as the third, the W Hotel?

I would add Kensington Place (on the site of the Gaiety Theater) as another "hole in the ground".

Ron, you're like a broken record on Filene's Basement. Do you really miss it that much???

They've created an eyesore. At least they admit they have a problem. They'd better not try to use their mess as leverage to get a sweeter deal from the city.

Wasn't that the one that was hole in the ground for awhile, then they filled in with white gravel?

I always believed that Macy's chose the wrong building to tear down. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pkeleher/253448954/

So now we see officially what those who work in DTX have known for a while. There is a giant hole in the ground with no immediate plans to fill it. The city needs to right now meet with the property owners who have empty store space, (and there is alot) and talk to them getting them to see the wisdom of filling this psace asap. The rents need to be affordable. They are not getting 70 dollars a square foor right now. It is not acceptable to leave rentable space empty due to greed. It is an eye sore and adds to the areas bad reputation. The Barnes & Noble building needs to be repainted and fixed up then rented out. Whatever price the market will bear. The economic Improvement Initiave needs to add more outdoor kiosks, entertainment and generally create a festive atmosphere so people will stop and shop there. It needs to feel, look and be safe which means a huge continuous police prescence. There needs to be FREE or affordable parking so people can drive in and shop. The main area should be devoid of city cars, ambulances and UPS trucks. Close it to traffic once and for all. The BID won't be happening for years so waiting for it is just putting people out of business. ACT NOW Mr. Mayor or you will lose the DTX because the shoppers will go elsewhere!

It will keep the cops happy - Mumbles can now make the developer pay them to state at one giant huge hole in the ground.

It's a good thing it's not Columbus - that would be one hell of a pothole in the turnpike.

I swear it, when I saw the Globe headline "Building Stalls at Filene's Old Site," I thought they were putting up some plywood shanties for the last few DTXing vendors...

Stalls
