Beacon Hill beats back the forces of evil

Or at least some guy who wanted to build a house on the hill. John Ford reports the city Zoning Board of Appeals today rejected a proposed single-family house at 1 Putnam Ave. - a 1,400-square-foot lot between Charles and West Cedar streets that can only be accessed via a walkway. The board cited concerns from the Fire Department over how it would get to the structure if it caught fire. Ford adds:

... The auditorium erupted with thunderous applause once the decision was announced. ...

Did they really taunt the guy by clapping when his bid was rejected?

However, el Zako does have a point - try finding those names via the city Web site (for that matter, try reading what you type in the search box on the city Web site).

Well maybe they should put a little power sub station in there instead, or something not quite as nice as a one family home.

A well advertized, well lit, frequently serviced public restroom.

There ya go!

That neighberhood could be the home of the new open access restroom. There would not be much of a hazard for fire, so that takes care of their concerns...

of the old school, old money, old age beacon hill/back bay crowd.

So why exactly were residents against this? Or is he just a bad developer??

The 'walkway access only' argument is garbage. There are dozens of homes that only have walkway access - this isn't unusual on the hill.

My neighborhood has (successfully) opposed proposed development on this ground, because, yes, there are houses behind other houses, but it's not generally done anymore, because it would create houses that firetrucks couldn't get to.
