Flynn blames Menino for firetruck woes

The Globe calls up Raybo (who, you may recall, had a special relationship with firefighters, who let him do stuff like run into burning buildings).

It was unavoidable that this blame game would occur. One thing I've noticed over the years is that Mayor Menino is very quick in deflecting and redirecting blame onto others.
The fact is indisputable, a man is dead because faulty equipment was not repaired.
The headbutting between the firefighters union and the Mayor is just politics. As long as the present situation goes unchanged the more likely this may happen again.
Make the motor pool a professional one. This is done by using quailified mechanics to work on the fire dept. vehicles. Firefighters are for fighting fires. Mechanics are for maintaining motor vehicles.

when the longest serving mayor in the city's history is in so far over his head that Machiavellian guile replaces any attempts at leadership, we DO get the government we deserve...

Say-Hey Ray needs some attention. He sometimes thinks he's still on the Celtics, sometimes that the firefighters still let him go in the buildings with them, and sometimes that he's still mayor. No, no and no.

It's extremely bad form to trash someone who's in the job you had. That's true for politicians, managers, and anyone. If his family didn't teach him that, he should have gotten it by observation.

He should have learned from being vilified in trying to overturn same-sex marriage. Rather than coming off as the Cardinal's good boy, he was more like a sour-grapes, anti-equality type.

Yeah, he has a First-Amendment right to make a loud ass of himself. He exercises that often enough. Pity.

but sometimes when it comes to safety stuff like brakes on vehicles, someone has to stand up and just order the parts or trucks or labor despite what your budget is. Union mechanics should simply put in purchase orders and if they dont get signed by someone for a budget reason, then that person who did not sign the PO order is responsible.

Kind of like the snowplow budget. You dont just stop plowing snow because there is no money left. You simply keep plowing and building debt because plowing has to get done, just like brakes on firetrucks have to be in working condition.

I guess Im just thinking that Menino wasnt denying any type of matienence on firetrucks because of budget issues. It just cant be that simple.

On Blue Mass. Group, David fisks the Globe story, says Flynn should consider his own fire failings as mayor, such as the reports from outside auditors criticizing the department under his watch for wasting millions on the Fire Department.
