Mortal fear of the BRA in the Fenway

Cosmo Catalano reports from tonight's meeting on rebuilding the Peterborough Street restaurant block, says residents want the restaurants to return, the landlord wants the restaurants to return and the restaurant owners want to return. But everybody kept looking over their shoulders to see if the sinister BRA was gaining on them:

... Apparently, the BRA can declare any construction effort over a certain size to be a Planned Development Area (PDA) which allows them to trample all sorts of regulations on zoning, building size, architectural style, etc.

No one wanted another Trilogy at Kilmarnock and Peterborough. But a small number of people expressed interest in seeing some of the car parks and empty storefronts across from Church redeveloped to mid-rise mixed-use structures. There's a fair difference (IMHO) between 12 stories and 4. ...

It's strange that a resident would call them empty... That whole block is at 100% occupancy and has been for years.

Along Kilmarnock St, from Peterborough St. to Queenberry St. is/was

1) Thorton's Fenway Grill (well...no longer)
2) Deaconess Garage (Boston Cab company's garage)
3) Boston Cab dispatch and office
4) Boston Car service (Boston Car Website
5) K Street (A GLBT non-profit - K Street Website)
6) Fenway convenience (The only 'corner store' in all of Fenway)
7) Hidyan Cafe

(Except for the non-empty storefront part, of course...)

The mailing list sign-up sheets didn't make it to my part of the room, but a Google group has been set up that may serve the same purpose.

The meeting was warm and neighborly, and everyone seemed to be in agreement: We want our restaurants back NOW! Unfortunately, it ain't gonna happen any time soon.

Oh, and a correction to Cosmo's tweet: It's the Fenway Burger King that'll be closing, not Mickey D's. (Anybody over 12 care?)

That BK is my comfort food when I have a bad day!!!!!!

Although I have noticed that the food there is more expensive than nearly any other BK (with the exception of airports...). Even the one in Copley Square is cheaper! Anyway...

The BK closing is terrible news. Now that the two on comm ave are gone, the closest is....what brighton ave near harvard ave?

Redevelop the site, yes, but why not have a ground floor BK?

As for the destroyed restaurants. They absolutely should be brought back. HOWEVER, if the money is there, why not make it a 4 story building with office or residential? People loved the food, the building itself was awful.

to lose a worthless fast-food franchise?

Some of us like choice. Especially when said choice is cheap.

Im not proposing a BK on every corner, but fast food is popular for a reason. It's certainly not worthless to those who enjoy a burger every few weeks. Once BK is gone, the neighborhood is left with mcdonalds (ew), 10$ burgers at restaurants, or 5$ burgers at Uburger in kenmore.

To each their own.

A cheap, fast, calorie packed meal every now and then is actually good for you. It shakes up your metabolism.

Furthermore, most restaurants serve entrees that just as many calories / fat / salt, in their large portions.

As long as it's not all fast food, one BK isn't a bad idea.

Your left coronary artery is telling me that I shouldn't tell you this, but BK at Gainsborough St. and Huntington Ave. is probably closest to the soon-to-close branch on the other side of the Fens.

It appears that indeed the McDonald's at Boylston and Jersey Sts in the Fenway will be the first to close, in a land-swap deal between the Red Sox, which owns the property, and developer the Abbey Group. The transaction is expected to close in April, and "Under the terms of the agreement, the Sox will demolish the fast-food restaurant." No shut-down date quoted, though.

I had based my earlier, erroneous assumption on a post (#145) at ArchBoston. My bad, and...

BK lovers, rejoice!
