Here comes Starbury

Stephon Marbury, formerly of the New York Knicks, announced today that he will be joining the Celtics as soon as tomorrow. Will Garnett and the others be able to mold him into a team-motivated role player behind Rondo at Point Guard? Boston teams seem to have a knack for getting "trouble players" in line for the betterment of the team as a whole. If nothing else, the end of the season should be very interesting to follow.

I've certainly been wrong before (I admit I wanted to keep Al Jefferson and not trade for KG - D'Oh!) but I don't see why the Celtics need this guy. He has consistently proven himself to be a locker room cancer and he reportedly didn't get along very well with KG when they were both with Minnesota.

I am not happy.

hey sul. i dont think he will be around for long if he starts any of his BS. i know he did not get along with KG in minnesota but KG, pierce and allen have all given their blessing. i read something yesterday where doc rivers said the lockeroom is good and its going to stay that way. he will probably only be here for the rest of this season and if he can still play he is quite a guy to have on the bench. just think corey dillon. he was good for a time and once he started his BS he was gone in short order.

The one thing that I've never understood about the whole "locker room cancer" thing is that we're talking about a guy who decided to sell an entire shoe and clothing line (Starbury) at Steve and Barry's stores exclusively, meaning that you won't find any item over about $20 max. He started this collaboration because he wanted city kids to be able to get quality shoes and gear without needing either $150 or a gun to get a pair of Air Jordans or other nonsense like that.

I think the biggest problem is that the man wants to win so badly that he acts out against his coach and teammates when things go wrong. In fact, I can't recall too much bad press about him until he ended up in New York and was surrounded with nobodies (partly because of his own high salary) after they traded away Van Horn and Doleac. I think you then saw him try too hard to be a one-man show to try and salvage the team...which just drove him to more frustration and more talk of him being a "cancer".

He has been out of the game now for a while due to injury and argument with the Knicks. He wants to get back and play. He wants good down-low teammates to complement his work on the outside. He wants most of all to win. He's going to be given all of those things here more than any other time in his career. I really see this as being a big turning point for him where he'll get everything he ever wanted out of the game and team (other than being the starter, I guess)...I see him being very happy here and I think we'll be happy with him too.

I just don't understand how someone who agrees to a deal like he did to make the Starbury clothing line affordable and all is a bad guy in general.

no question about that. the shoes were his way of being in the spotlight, looking like a great guy. he is an arrogant, selfish guy and has shown this every place he has played. i just think there are too many strong personalities in the celtics lockeroom for him to be a problem for long.he starts his crap and he is going to be released.

Once he puts on the green, I'll give him every chance. If he proves me wrong, I'll happily admit it. I'm scared, though.

At bottom, I'm a huge Rondo fan, so I tend to get verklempt when they go searching for point guard help. I know this isn't the same as picking up Sam last year, as Rondo is definitely the main PG for now and the foreseeable future, and they probably need a better back-up than either Pruitt or E. House, but a little piece of me still fears diminution of Rondo's playing time.

Dennis Johnson was a "problem" player in high school, college, in Phoenix and Seattle before he came to the Celtics and became a perpetual all-star and member of the NBA Basketball Hall of Fame. Bird said if he could pick one guy to be on his team, it would be DJ. So, you never know until you try. Why decide now? We'll see. Cetainly both Ainge and Doc have made their assessment and had a conversation. This Celtics team doesn't seem to let much get in the way of their on court focus. Maybe Stephan will get the chance he always needed and our team will be the beneficiary.
