One triple-slay victim leaves two young children

Gaines
Gaines

Boston Police today reported the names of the three people gunned down outside an after-hours party at 41 Mt. Ida Rd. in Dorchester early Sunday: Anthony Peoples, 19, of Boston, Shacora Gaines, 20, of Brockton and Chantal Palmer, 20, of Brockton.

According to her MySpace page, Gaines had two children, a 4-year-old daughter and an infant son. She described herself as a soca and reggae lover and wrote:

... Im a pretty laid back chic i like to smoke weed and drink henny and remy red. ...

I'm missing the point to quoting that particular fragment of the MySpace page. I would have either not quoted the MySpace page at all, or given more more context to the quote:

"About me:
Im a 5'4 bajan and jamaican indian female. I have two children 1 girl who is 4 and 1 boy who is now three months and i love them both to death and i will fuck any up any body who ever tries to fuck with my seeds family or not. Im a pretty laid back chic i like to smoke weed and drink henny and remy red. I love my man who's name is jay-jay and the same goes for him if any body fucks with him it's a rap and that also goes for my sister shay. I love to go to reggae and soca clubs only i dont get down like that to hip-hop."

I'm also wondering how many people get this. A lot of people grow up and live in high-conflict environments. In those environments, one can be a good person and still say things like this.

A 20 year old mother of 2 small children (presuming single mother in that no father is spoken of) who professes her love for smokin' weed and drinkin' henny and remy red. There are peoople who live in the environment you speak of who do the right things....this doesnt seem to be the case here. Very sad that she was killed. Maybe if she was home with her kids at such an hour things would have been different.

Wasnt there a comedian who did a piece on his mother making him wear clean underwear when he went out for the night in case he was in a bad car accident? Now shouldnt the worry be what you write about yourself on facebook and myspace?

The best part is it's not just the EMTs but any old after-the-fact blogger who gets to see it.

I've got an eight-month-old. It's fair to say my life revolves around her. Last weekend I went out to Pho Republique with some friends and had a few and closed the place out, for the first time since before I got pregnant.

I had a great time. It felt like a week of vacation. But the whole way home, driving through Dorchester at 2am, all I could think was, "If I get killed on my way home tonight, all anybody will ever remember about me is that I left my baby at home to go to a bar."

Judge judge judge judge judge.

Everybody will be able to look it up for the rest of your life. It'll be preserved in scarlet letters.

People used to take much more seriously the idea that no matter how well you hid your bad behavior, God would see you. Now it's Teh Google.

Which is fine, actually. I don't believe in covering up bad behavior. Hence no pseudonym for me.

That's an interesting perspective.

On the other hand, God is good. God is by definition qualified to judge you. God is also omniscient. A pseudonym doesn't fool God. So God can judge you just the same, and will probably be a good job of it. Doesn't matter if you trust Him, either, so you might as well.

People, on the other hand, not so much on either count. I work with some real wackos, and have certainly encountered others on the internets. (My office neighbor is at this moment speaking on the phone in conspiratorial tones about how Obama is a communist and Dick's Sporting Goods is out of ammo. I take it for a given that he's going to shoot somebody one of these days, and I'm hoping it won't be me.)

I am less and less interested in having my name appear on the internet. It's not about any shame I might feel. It's about judgment by the unworthy, and the fact that this judgment can be terminal.

People are, it cannot be denied, a bunch of goddamn lunatics.

I can't help saying something here. If one of my coworkers was talking at work about wanting to shoot people, I'd be going to have a chat with HR. I'm about the last person who'd bother myself with people's petty crap that doesn't actually affect my work, but talking about shooting people is way over that hostile workplace line. (FWIW, I think there's a big difference between the sort of hyperbolic "dammit, I'm gonna kill that guy" that we all resort to at times and actual mention of needing ammo to do so.)

Sock_Puppet, you deserve a non-threatening work environment.

If I were to talk to HR about my wacky neighbor, it's a fair certainty I'd end up getting fired for it. In my company, HR is the department you go to to get fired.

Here's a sample joke from Wacky:

Hey there, Socky. Whud you do this weekend?
I was out shootin cans!
You know... afriCans, mexiCans, portoriCans!

I mentioned my discomfort to a colleague in an offhand way the week he was on vacation. You know, like

Socky: Gee, it sure is quiet without Wacky on the phone all day talking about how the black people are gonna rise up and he doesn't have enough ammo. On the other hand, I feel a bit safer. Ha ha!

Admin: (squinty look of mistrust and protectiveness) Wacky has seen some things.

He's a veteran, like many people at my workplace. I'm pretty sure he has an anxiety disorder he's under treatment for. I'd be pilloried for 'picking on him,' ostracized, and perhaps sabotaged. And the personal threat level would rise, not drop. Unlike you, he knows where I live. My hope for a non-threatening workplace includes the reassuring hope that when he flips out and starts shooting, it will be elsewhere. Every time he says he's going on vacation, I feel relief.

Yes, the non-threatening workplace I'd be most likely to get would be... not this one.

If you look at it in just the right way, it's unreasonable of me to try to prevent my colleague from working through his anxiety (you know, with a Negro Communist as president, who wouldn't be anxious?) in the way that feels most comfortable to him.

So I just dish it back at him. Sample Socky jokes:

Hey, you're late, Wacky!
Whud, you hafta go burn down a church in Springfield?

Wacky, you're like a mystery snack bag.
I don't know if you're nuts or just a cracker!

Hey, but thanks for sympathizing!

Just because some1 has kids doesn't mean that they are on house arrest...who's to say that she wasn't always home and didn't just decide to go out that 1 night...it was probably a wrong place wrong time kinda thing...the news always makes things seem like what they're not...and another thing just because some1 likes to smoke weed doesn't make them a bad person nor does drinking...As Fucked up as the world is people find different ways to deal...that may have been hers...it doesn't mean she deserved to be shot and killed...

Your Clearly Missing The Fuckin Point...She's Gone And Never Coming Back...Your Judging Her On What Her Myspace Said...And Because Of The Time She Got Shot...So What If She Went Out...Just Because She Had Kids Doesn't Mean She Can't Have A Life and Just Because She Was Out At 4am Don't Mean She Should have Been Shot And Killed.

Finn,

Can you show me a woman that wouldn't Frak you up if you messed with her kids?

If you can show me one, I'll give you a million dollars.

Still, this unfortunate incident follows a rule I've observed. If you want to be safe in some areas of the city, make it a point to be in bed from the hours of 11pm to 6am. I'm willing to bet offhand 80% of the homicides in the city last year happened between those hours, in limited neighborhoods of the city. Granted, many were rolling with the wrong crowd, which is also a factor, but most of the thugs seem to aspire by twilight creed.

How can you people sit here and say, "i kno for a fact she didnt have her daughter with her. Her daughter was adopted 2 years ago" Yall didnt pay her bills, didnt clothe her, didnt put food on her table, and danm sure didnt live with her. So dont think just because your googling things they automatically have to be true because everything is not. They try to potray everyone in the hood as a bad person....jusst like the above statement that was made. Yes she liked to smoke and drink but where was the other part talking about how she loved and cherished her kids????? Oh you forgot about that piece huh? Another thing, before you sit here and judge someone who has tragically passed away, try spending time with the family, because they will clearly tell you that she was a stay at home mom who was always with her children and when she wasn't, she was out looking for a job to support her family. She just decided to go out 1 night and try to have some fun. So please, stop with the ignorance. Rest in peace Anthony, Dee Dee and Cora
