North End residents fight BRA effort to turn waterfront vista into a restaurant

India New England reports on the appeal to state environmental officials over the tip of Long Wharf, currently the site of a public pavilion and park that the BRA wants to turn over to a developer because, apparently, the BRA doesn't think the area has enough restaurants already.

I live in the North End too and these people complain about everything. That space is NEVER used. My parents keep their boat in the slips right at that location, and growing up I would never seen people use that space. At least the restaurant will get people to go over to that section. Space will still be available around the restaurant, so I dont see what the big deal is.

Long Wharf is used a lot, in my experience, and is one of my favorite places to take visitors on a walking tour of Boston.

You get a combination of people walking down the length of it, and people hanging out quietly on the benches and edge. There are two telescopes that people use to look at boats and planes in the distance.

It's a nice quiet escape, a short walk from various tourist attractions, restaurants, shopping, office skyscrapers, etc.

However, I hardly ever see the pavillion structure itself being used. It would be nice to do something more with that, but *not* a bar/restaurant commercializing the plaza and introducing noise and bustle like people go there to escape. It's the *anti* Faneuil Hall.

The other thing to do is to have a rule that the occasional skateboarder may be tossed into the harbor.

What's wrong with having open space to look at the ocean? I wouldn't consider that a 'vast wasteland'. Not every open bit of space has to be filled and every decent view on the waterfront blocked off with buildings.

What happened to the big 'public access' movement. I enjoy hanging out at long wharf when I'm down there, and there are always people there. The BRA is spinning wildly out of control.
