When Carr digs up stories such as skeezyness and cronyism in Mass politics and business, he plays an invaluable gadfly role.
But then he lapses into his Boston hater mode. He can't help himself.

Im not saying the government should do it, or even an mob of angry citizens!. Rather my hope is the same market forces driving the Globe to the edge of the cliff push Howie Carr and his empire of hate off first.
The Globe did, in fact,
The Globe did, in fact, cover for Whitey Bulger - to protect Billy, of course. That would be Whitey the serial killer. And it was no secret 30 years ago that Whitey was a murderer - the police knew it and the reporters at the Globe knew it. But Billy was an Important Person, and who knew what Whitey would do, so they looked the other way.
One person talked about Whitey Bulger in this city. One person had his life threatened for daring to do so.
All those who have joined Howie Carr in calling out a serial killer, raise your hands.

You can't take Howie Carr
You can't take Howie Carr seriously. A recent "article' by him covered the ever important 'scandal' that some female politicians didnt want to list their birthdays in public.
The Herald COULD serve a useful purpose in covering politics in Boston since the globe has decided they are only covering the burbs and issues in the Boston/Cambridgeville that affect suburbanites. However, its people like Howie and articles like today's "Lady Mayor, Love Hurts" where the Herald seems to have such disdain for anyone who is not a white intolerant hillbilly (even a rich one from Wellesley like Howie) that it is irrelevant.
Even when the Globe goes away, I don't see many people saying, "Now that the Globe is gone I'm going to get a lobotomy, put on my klan outfit, and start 'reading' the Herald." Not likely.
True, the Herald is not the
True, the Herald is not the reason why the Globe is faltering. The Globe is being hurt by the NYT being inept and by the internet where its high minded audience can find information days before it can show up in the pages of the Globe. The Herald on the other hand has always been a working mans paper and actually has a much more stable base because much of its base doesnt have internet access at work, and lets be honest when it comes to sheer entertainment the Herald is just as entertaining as many websites wheter it be a two page spread on why Boston is better then NY or the gossip columns on something like page 7. It also has that handy dandy sports coverage in the back with the back serving as a second front page. Now that I think of it the Globe could learn something from the Herald, the Herald still reports news but gives its readers what they want as well. The Globe doesnt have to act like the Herald but it could listen to those high minded folks who are ditching the paper, and ask them "what do you want?"
What stinks is that Howie's
What stinks is that Howie's rants take away from all the great work the Herald has done recently on the Globe's demise. The Herald has done some of its best reporting in months as it tracks the NYT money trail and the union's movements. Of course, it's easier for the Herald to write these stories than the Globe for sure, but still, the reporting has been spot-on; kudos to them.
You mean some of you actually read that stuff?
I got so bored reading after about the third article I gave up on the guy - he says the same thing day after day and often doesn't even bother using new words or even different sentences! Seems like all his stuff is now cut and pasted from old material.
I did read one time that he will only take information from you if you hand him the full story, naming names, dates, places etc. etc. already written in 6th grade English in under 600 words. He can't be bothered doing any investigative reporting - but if it checks out he's happy to use yours and get paid for it.
I probably tend to agree with a lot of what he writes about feeding at the public trough etc. etc. - but for a guy who uses the term hack in everything he writes, he's a pretty big hack himself.
