The street cop

Bobby Constantino gets off the 15 bus in Uphams Corner just in time to see Officer Monteiro in action:

... After, he moved on to the next group, riding and beeping his horn, talking to everyone he saw. Everyone knew him, everyone talked to him, and it made me so happy to see him out there.

It's a no-brainer that this is the best way to create a good bond between residents and police; a bond that is critical in communities touched by violence. Although we don't see it nearly enough in Boston, luckily in my neighborhood we have Officer Monteiro. ...

Amazing what a street cop can do. A few years ago as Rozzie square was setting about cleaning itself up the local beat cop went around to a lot of the neighborhood businesses and talked up an idea (I think originally floated by Main Streets) about how it would help reduce the trash and the "broken windows" effect if we paved over the parking lot out in back of the Bistro and Delfino's (which used to be a mess of broken asphalt, dumpsters, trash cans etc.) I think almost everyone on the square chipped in, it didn't cost a fortune and it's been much cleaner and more pleasant in the neighborhood ever since. If there are any cops out there questioning the effect you have on the "little things" like graffiti, fixing windows or encouraging cleaning up a messy lot - don't - they make a big difference especially cumulatively. And for those of you like officer Monteiro doing all these little things - thank you!
