I stopped to talk to these guys. I think the point they were trying to make was that us citizens should call the mayors office and complain. I didn't fully understand the whole plan. Was this supposed to go on indefinitely?
That station is the closest to my house. Probably so too for a lot of people in Boston.
if the west roxbury was one of the stations that they want to "brownout".
But I have a feeling that the city is doing this around the time (4th of July) where a lot of firefighters will call in sick during the weekend, creating a lot of overtime for the department. The city probably wants to send a message that they will not create overtime anymore for sicktime abuse and will go with less stations open during those shifts/dates.
Im sure there is a lot more to this story. Id love to hear an unbiased opinion on what is going on (not the city or union side)
Why are the union signs on Fire Department property and draped on a piece of apparatus? These things belong to the city and the taxpayers. They don't belong to the union or the workers. Whoever manages this firehouse should be demoted.
But I guess that's the problem with the fire department. The union runs the operation. A non-union management structure, right down to the firehouse level, is needed now.
I don't think the Firemen's Union is serving their members very well. Contract negotiations has been going on for years. Had they signed an agreement before the market and economy hit the shytter, they'd have a much better deal than they're ever going to get now. Who else is tired of the self-righteous posturing contest between the firefighters and the city?

Why not use it for signs.
Why not use it for signs. It's not being used to respond to medical calls or fires.
