And this is why you have to slow down in the FastLane

Channel 4 reports a guy speeding westbound on the turnpike early this morning lost control of his car, which sailed through the air into an empty toll booth at the Weston plaza and then burst into flames.

With photo of the newly impaled car.

I swear that the TV news this morning said he was involved in a police chase...

Channel 25 reports the guy refused to stop for cops on "Rt. 95" in Waltham (I know, technically that's correct, but still) and decided to try a getaway on the turnpike.

It has been the proper and official designation for the highway between Canton and Peabody since 1975 (that's over 30 years ago people). While there are still some Route 128 markers along the road as well, '128' is a secondary designation that, IMO, provides no additional benefit to drivers that the I-95 designation cannot.

And for all of you out there (including our ace traffic reporters) who insist on continuing to refer to the road as Route 128 "because that's the way it's always been", take a moment to consider this question:

When you pay your phone bill, do you still write the checks to New England Telephone?

"I-95" is correct. "Route 95," which was what it was called, is not correct.

I see it a different way perhaps. 128 works as a more specific designation of the highway, a subset of I-95. It is clear that the highway was originally built as 128, with the I-95 designation retrofitted onto it. For instance, traveling straight in Canton going south on "128" at the 95-93 interchange takes you onto I-93, not I-95. A similar situation occurs in peabody.

Likewise, in Cambridge/Somerville, I refer to the section of route 16 between alewife station and mystic valley parkway as Alewife parkway, rather than route 16, because it's more specific. Route 16 itself makes a bunch of awkward turns and only uses alewife parkway for a portion of the route.

By contrast, route 9, between Worcester and Boston, was built as one straight and continuous road, the Worcester Turnpike, and so I have no problems with calling it Route 9, even though that wasn't the original name.

between Canton and Peabody, the highway signs at entrances all reference I-95, the exit numbers correctly continue the numbering sequence for I-95, and the mileposts all give the distance for I-95 from the 0.0 milepoint at the state border in Attleboro. The "true" Route 128 exit numbers and milepoints don't start until the roads separate in Peabody.

Plus, as the Globe pointed out in an article a short time back, all the major GPS makers (correctly) refer to the highway as part of I-95, and not 128.

In light of this evidence, I submit that the concept of formally recognizing Route 128 as a 'subset' of I-95 for the benefit of local drivers who should be familar enough with the area roads that they only need minimal nagavational assistance does not make much sense. Further, providing two route numbers for the same section of highway only increases the potential for confusion among the majority of interstate travelers.

And I hate to say this, but it almost seems to me that the Route 128 designation south of Peabody will not be removed until the day somebody dies in a serious car accident because the emergency crew was dispatched to "Route 128 Exit 15" in Dedham instead of "Route 128 Exit 15" in Manchester BS (by the sea).

Let us all hope that common sense will prevail long before that is allowed to happen.

Holy cow! I can't believe it!! They broke from 24/7 Kennedy reporting to actually show some news? I hope this doesn't start a trend...

Fox News reports that the "dirver", quite possibly someone who moonlights for them as a copy editor, died as a result.

A) You went to school? Wow.
B) He did kill someone: himself. The only thing that kept him from killing anyone else is just dumb luck.
C) I was a college student who didn't drink or smoke weed...and I'm a guy!
D) I don't know anyone with a DUI or who drives blazed.
E) Yeah, pretty stupid...just like your entire post. Way to exemplify exactly what people were complaining about to begin with.
