How Ikea sucks

Sharon reports on Planning Livable Communities that she and her husband went down to the Stoughton Ikea today. Loved the merchandise, hated everything else:

... In terms of planning and community, the store is just this side of an abomination. And I don't mean simply that it's yet another ugly big box that encourages sprawl (although it's certainly that). I'm astounded that a world-renowned "design" company would set up shop in such a poorly designed parcel, so customers are all but guaranteed to sit in hideous traffic bottlenecks. I don't know whether the fault lies with Ikea or Stoughton planning officials, but the on-site traffic flow is a mess.

How bad was it? We pulled out of our parking spot in the Ikea parking garage at 1:39 p.m. We finally managed to exit the Ikea property at 2:17 p.m. That's right: It took us 38 minutes to crawl through the Ikea gridlock and get off the store's property. ...

Funny, I was there, too, and I vowed: Never again will I go to Ikea on a holiday!

Who decided that the best traffic design would be to direct everyone through the covered parking area first (which has NO available spaces, and slows down the people trying to leave or to get to the loading areas), rather than sending them immediately to the open lot?

As it was, I got what had to be one of the last free spots when I pulled in around 11am. As I packed up the car to leave at 1pm, there was already someone sitting and watching, waiting for my space. Clearly, there isn't enough parking to handle holiday traffic.

Agreed. I don't really understand what draws people to Ikea, anyway...sure, their furniture is inexpensive, but it hardly lasts a year.
