Trapped in Southborough

You may have heard about the LNG tanker that overturned on the turnpike out by 495 this morning.

My office building is on the eastbound side of Rte. 9, between 495 and the Framingham turnpike entrance. Guess which road they've diverted all eastbound turnpike traffic onto? Guess which road is the ONLY way out of my office park? Gah! Somebody send over a blimp! And nobody set anything on fire here, m'kay?

this might be a good time to explore Route 20. Normally that's out of your way, but I bet it will be a lot less crowded than 9.

Which I can't. Here's a graphic depiction of my situation:

grrrrr

The ONLY egress to and from my building is Rte. 9. Once I can get to the Framingham exit a couple miles down Rte. 9, I'll be golden, because there won't be any traffic coming from the west, but ...

Is this the kind of place where it would be easy to make an illegal U-turn once you get on the highway?

Alas, no, because there's a median barrier for a mile or so. Besides, the westbound side was every bit as crammed.

This happened to me once, when I was working near 128. A few people tried leaving the office, and then called back to say they'd gone about 100 feet in half an hour. So we all walked over to a nearby restaurant with a bar, and drank beers for a couple of hours until we could get out. Do you have any such nearby watering hole? It's definitely more fun if you're trapped with a bunch of friends/co-workers.

OK, also, one of those fancy Italian places that serves incredibly tiny portions of things. Alas, I think most of the co-workers are already snared on the road somewhere.

Hmm, I can hear helicopters outside (probably news choppers doing live shots of the overturned tanker). Wonder if one could stop and give me a lift? :-).

Rte. 9 in Southborough around 5:45 p.m.

It took me an hour to get from White's Corner to Temple Street in Framingham, which usually takes about 15 minutes, at most. Grrr. Especially annoying: The state police had blocked off all traffic at the Rte. 9 turnpike entrance - even for people heading east (the accident was to the west). Maybe they were using the extra lanes to get people off the turnpike?

Odd: As soon as I got past Temple Street, the traffic basically vanished. Where did all the cars and trucks go? Then again, that's always the case at Temple Street - that's just one massively sucky intersection.

Understand the company that had the accident is Transgas. Transgas is a wholly owned subsidiary of KEYSPAN Corp. (soon to be known as National Grid). Keyspan the utility, should they be in the trucking business?
