Protesting Macy's decision to can the gay mannequins

Jesse Kanson-Benanav wants the mannequins back:

... Fact is, if Macy's is concerned with presenting window displays which won't alienate Massachusetts residents, they had better put those manequins back quick. Poll after poll has proven that Massachusetts residents support marriage equality. ...

MassEquality has an online protest-o-matic that lets you e-mail Macy's chairman without even having to think about what to say.

John Keith looks at the photo and says those aren't man-breasts, they're muscles:

... So, what is it you are afraid of? That your children will grow up ... and go to the gym??? ...

Domenico Bettinelli, however, says the mannequins exposed gays' depraved lifestyle:

... The happy image they want you to see are the two chinos-clad, normal-looking, professional guys with the white picket fence and two kids adopted from a Third World hellhole. What they don't want you to see is the bondage, self-mutilation, open sexual activity, bigotry, and outright rage that is very common.

"Very common"? What, like being a psychotic serial murderer a la Tony Soprano is "very common" amongst obese Italian-Americans?

If Domenico actually knew any GLBT people, he'd realize that our lives are really just like anyone else's.

(And, um, self-mutilation? What?)

Adam: Once again, by selective quoting and adding your own spin in your link, you have effectively mischaracterized what I've written and created a false impresison. Bravo.

It seems the only time you care to link to my blog is when you want to use me as a conservative bete noir.

Mr. Bettinelli, I followed the link to read your entire blog post, and I'm not sure how Adam distorted it. Did you not refer to the "depraved" things one sees in a "'gay' town"? If you meant something else, could you clarify what it is?

Okay, I'll bite. How exactly were you mischaracterized? I'm pretty sure you wrote the words Adam quoted, and I'm pretty sure you weren't being ironic, and I'm also pretty sure you said that in "gay" towns you see "depravity dressed up as normalcy all the time".

So the ball is in your court. I'd love to hear an explanation.

Domenico, if you stop writing hateful things in your blog, you won't have to worry about people quoting your blog and talking about how hateful the things you write are.

I followed the link to see if your quote was taken out of context.

It wasn't.

I'm going to have to agree with the previous commenters and express some puzzlement as to how you think Adam misrepresented your opinion.

Adam says that you stated that "bondage, self-mutilation, open sexual activity, bigotry, and outright rage. . ."is very common among gays.

You said...exactly that, in so many words.

Where's the misrepresentation now?

And really, people don't post potentially inflammatory rhetoric in public unless they're looking for a response.

Bettinelli-
You're the one spewing hate. All Adam did was quote you. By the way, when you call someone bigoted, it's just funny.  If Adam were really after you, he'd add some adjectives to his posts.  Like "brainwashed,"or " obsessed," or maybe "psychotic," or -my personal opinion here- "secretly gay."

CP

By the way, you're not conservative. You're regressive and theocratic.

I for one hate window displays all the time and really couldn't care less what is in them. I don't shop at Macy's because I wear a size larger than 2, and anything they have there in a larger size looks shitty for the fat (but totally awesome babe) I am.

As for the people who put pressure on Macy's to take down the initial display, they should check their heads. I think (personally) they should spend their time and energy into protesting the fact that these companies push a "desirable" image of skinny anorexic women at the public on a daily basis.

I find the messages set forth by what fashion magazines publish and department stores peddle far more revolting than "gay" dummies in a window.

am i the only one?

That was my thought too. In fact, I may blog about it. I think the pride models have been one of the more realistic and progressive images they've put forth, actually.

Another thing that bugs me besides the size thing is that Macy's also only showcases the upper-class gender-super-normative clothing they sell. This is not all they sell, but it's what's in the windows and on the ads. Other stores will have displays in which some of the women are wearing cargos and track suits and hippy skirts and things, but at Macy's it's all high-femme mannequins with purses and types of suits that only look good on a size 2. And it isn't because this is all Macy's sells -- they have plenty of stuff I'd wear as a not-skinny fairly butch female, but the place just turns me off. I'd much rather avoid getting sprayed by perfume snipers and get my clothes at Old Navy or H&M or Urban Outfitters.

thank you eeka. so glad to see we agree. i'm a conservative, christian, mom, hippy-skirt wearing, size 18. I'd rather wear cargoes and golf shirts. (guess what i have on right now). i can't wear lowriders, i don't have big boobs (the mannequin in the display did have bigger boobs than me, probably from going to the mannequin gym!)

i deliberately work in an environment where i don't have to dress business, business casual, formal, dressy, or anything. but i have a hard time finding nice things to wear to weddings that aren't emblazoned with some sort of logo for some company... or fashion that isn't fashionable.

i once saw a teenaged girl in a wendy's who was about a size 20 in a tiny little short skirt, tiny little tank top that she constantly was pulling down over her roll, huge sandals, fake tan, lots of bling, designer sunglasses, and no ability to get out of a chair without flashing her vag to the entire place.

just because they make an item NEAR your size, sister, doesn't mean you should wear it. the problem is, this is what Macy's/other stores offer to big women. The same items for little women, horizontally adjusted (sort of).

i wanted to call her mommy and suggest they go buy different clothes.

Comments have been reopened at Domenico's site, in case you're interested. I'm not sure why you'd bother, though, except maybe to be able to read the pretty stunning stuff he and his supporters have written so far in defense of his post and against any commenters who have disagreed.

I wonder if Mr. Bettinelli would agree with the eloquent description of the harm caused by same-sex marriage in this short video clip by local traditional values leader Brian Camenker. Watch it--very eye opening.
